Why You Should Give VH1’s Basketball Wives a Chance

Basketball Wives premiered on VH1 in April 2010. The reality show follows the luxurious lives of NBA basketball stars’ current and former wives and girlfriends. The show was co-created by Shaunie O’Neal, ex-wife of basketball pro Shaquille O’Neal, and is produced by Shed Media. The first season was filmed in Miami and the following season was filmed in Los Angeles. After a 5 year break, “Basketball Wives” returned for a sixth season this spring.

The Los Angeles based show promises to have its most exciting season yet. Bringing back original “Miami” cast members and mixing in “LA” characters promises to create a lot of drama as VH1 follows the women and their interactions. Some original characters were not cast for the re-boot but will make cameo appearances.

Here are reasons why you should give Basketball Wives a chance as season 6 proves to be the most exciting yet.

Premiere Drama

The April premiere of “Basketball Wives” brought best friends Evenly and Shaunie together backstage at “The Reel” which Shaunie was guest hosting. At Shaunie’s birthday party, it soon became clear that there was tension between Evenly, Tami and Jackie. The revelation that Evenly has been with 3 major NBA stars in the past 6 years created drama among the women, proving this season is going to shake up the show’s drama. Other drama inducing themes include Tammy’s bitter divorce and Jackie’s estrangement from her daughter. Based on the premier, season 6 is set to be an interesting season.

Addition of Bonnie-Jill

Bonnie-Jill Laflin, a former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, sports correspondent and the first female scout for the NBA, is introduced to the women of “Basketball Wives”. Bonnie-Jill has no intention of getting caught up in the drama between the women. She wants to use the show as a platform for strong women. Her introduction to the show does create added drama among the “wives”. It’s nice to see the addition of the seasoned NBA “player” and friend of several of the women’s NBA men.

The Stylist

The sixth season of “Basketball Wives” reunited cast has added another member to the group. Saniy’yah Samaa Dodson, a celebrity stylist, is brought into the group by Evenly to give Christin Metoyer a makeover. After putting Christen down, Saniy’yah is not well received by the group. When Jackie Christie invites her to a dinner with the girls, Saniy’yah provides more information for further drama with the other women. She tells them that she had an affair with an NBA player who has 3 children with his now wife. She tells the girls that she slept with him right up to his wedding day.

Cameos

One of the major casting decisions for the sixth season of “Basketball Wives” was not to include the regular return of Brandi Maxill, Malaysia Pargo, Angel Brinks, Angel Love and DJ Duffy. The women all appear in dramatic cameos this season. These appearances are certain to add heightened drama.

Other Exciting Stories

Typical of “Basketball Wives”, there are several storylines that create added tension among the women as they try to get along while expressing their opinions. The storylines and the new combination of the women is sure to add drama but not in the typical “fights” from prior seasons. Keonna Green has given birth to her second child with an NBA pro after she was labeled his “side chick” during his breakup with another woman.

Elena Ahanzedeh is no stranger to speaking her mind. She shocks the other women when she reveals that she slept with one of their NBA men. Jackie and Tami continue to get into tense situations culminating when Jackie crashes Tami’s book signing. Shaunie tries to broker peace between Tami and Evenly. Tami’s bitter divorce and Jackie’s estrangement from her daughter all play a role in this season’s drama.
