Gaming For Primetime – Six Video Games That Would Conquer TV

Fallout

What it’s about: Players take on the role of an idealistic scientist’s offspring living in an elaborate underground fallout shelter-post called ‘Vault 101’nuclear apocalypse. Your character wakes up one day to find that Dad has disappeared into the wasteland in pursuit of something called ‘˜project purity,’a device that can bring fresh water back to the scorched wasteland. The player must escape the Vault ruler, the oppressive Overseer, in order to leave the bunker and set out to find his father. If you think that story sounds sort of standard-fare, hold on to your pants; once the ‘lone wanderer’embarks on the wasteland he finds it populated by mutants, zombies, slavers, wastelanders, and enough unique subplots to keep the overarching plot from wrapping up anytime soon.

Who should play who: Since the game allows you to play as either a guy or a gal, the TV show would have to be just as gender-fair and turn the role of the ‘Lone Wanderer’into ‘Lone Wanderers.’I foresee twins seeking their father with a few Vault rogues joining them on the adventure. Since they’ve been locked up underground all their lives, the cast would need to have a twinkle in their eye – but still be able to kick ass. For the leads: Drake Bell (casting against type), and Summer Glau. Supporting cast: Bruce Greenwood as the father, Tyler Labine as a tag along.

Why it’s good TV: Part of the game’s charm is the transformation of the lead into a wasteland legend; we call that character development. Players of the game often applaud the fact that you can ‘˜sink into’the world of the wasteland and deal with the overarching plot concerning dad at your own pace. In other words, the overarching mythology is field tested and doesn’t require the commitment of something like LOST.

The world of Fallout is rich with themes that have worked well on TV: it is a quest story that calls on the lead to constantly push the boundaries of their own morals, often resulting in painful decisions – that’s great drama. Also, peeling the layers back on a society that developed atop the scorched remains of our long forgotten empire is utterly fascinating.
