This week, Two and a Half Men star Angus T. Jones made headlines when he publicly trashed his own hit show. I’ll let you read what he had to say below, but I thought I’d hunt down some other prominent examples of actors who have turned on their own shows via the press. Nothing quite like biting the hand that feeds you.
Angus T. Jones (Two and a Half Men)
“If you watch Two and a Half Men, please stop watching Two and a Half Men. I’m on Two and a Half Men, and I don’t want to be on it. Please stop watching it and filling your head with filth. Do some research on the effects of television and your brain, and I promise you you’ll have a decision to make when it comes to television.”
This was inspired by a recent conversion to Christianity, and Jones apparently believes the devil is using his show to hurt people somehow. I guess the devil could be on the hunt for our brain cells, which are quickly killed when watching Two and a Half Men.
Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy)
“I do not feel I was given the material this season to warrant a nomination.”
That’s what Heigl said after withdrawing herself from Emmy consideration a few years back, probably the biggest F-U to a show on this list. She frequently sparred with the cast and writers until she was ultimately written out.
Eddie Murphy (SNL)
“They were sh*tty to me on Saturday Night Live a couple of times after I’d left the show. They said some sh*tty things. There was that David Spade sketch (Spade showed a picture of Murphy and said, ‘Look, children, a falling star’). I made a stink about it, it became part of the folklore. What really irritated me about it at the time was that it was a career shot.”
Did you know that Eddie Murphy hated SNL? I didn’t. I never saw him come back to host or anything, but I hadn’t realized there was any bad blood there. David Spade sounds like a dick here. Even if Eddie’s movies suck now, there was a time when he was the biggest comedy star in the world.
Chevy Chase (Community)
“I’ve been doing this a long time, and I’ve been making a lot of people laugh a lot better than this,”
That’s what Chevy Chase said just a little while before quitting Community entirely. It’s not like it matters because the show is about to get cancelled anyway, but I don’t understand Chase’s hate for the show. Does he not realize that it’s already a cult classic loved by millions? Does he just not get this new era of comedy that he is unwillingly a part of? He’s called Community “a f***ing mediocre sitcom” which doesn’t make sense to anyone who has ever seen the show, much less starred in it.
Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl)
“I’m gonna look for my dignity. My dignity is somewhere on set. I think it happened around season two. Leading into season three, it was all out the window.”
Chace is still on the show, which should be wrapping up soon, but I’m sure he took a lot of crap for those comments. To be fair, he always has been the worst character on the show, which likely the fault of the writers, not him as an actor. But still, you don’t want to say that out loud.
