Five Things You Should Know About “The Bold Type”

There’s a new series out this summer and it has all the earmarks of being a success. “The Bold Type” is a Freeform series that is a return of the previous television show “Issues.” Katie Stevens and Melora Hardin team up to present the interesting things that the people who are at the helm of a popular women’s magazine are up to. Stevens plays the role of a writer who has recently received the promotion of a lifetime. Hardin is the editor in chief of the magazine. The show has had some great press, but here are five things that you should know about “The Bold Type.”

1. This series is inspired by Cosmopolitan Magazine

You won’t hear this on the show but reliable sources have shared that the inspiration for the show is Cosmopolitan. Joanna Coles is a producer of “The Bold Type” and she is also currently involved with the production of “So Cosmo” on E! She both produces and stars in the similar show so we have some great clues that Scarlet Magazine is merely an alias for the ever popular Cosmo.

2. The show sends a positive message

“The Bold Type” has a strong message that underscores the goals of modern feminism with a message of hope and empowerment for women. The two main characters set the example of what intelligent, talented and committed women can do with a little help from one another. As the series develops, we will see a strong friendship develop between these ladies as we follow their careers through struggles and triumphs.

3. Sarah Watson created the series

For anyone who isn’t familiar with Sarah, she also created the popular film “Parenthood.” She serves as the executive producer in addition to other producers Joanna Coles, Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad. With Sarah on board the series has tremendous credibility.

4. The show was originally an NBC series

Although NBC didn’t see this project through, there was a version of it that was being developed by the mega network. While the previous abandoned work served as the foundation, it went through some serious changes before it was approved for order in April of last year. After a re-working, the series found its home at Freeform.

5. The show has real life applications

Joanna Cole has experience in the magazine business. Her writing and producing takes a realistic approach that shows the world what happens in the creation of a popular magazine. While this isn’t something that the average reader thinks about, those who have professional experience will certainly understand what’s going on in the show. Of course, there will be some dramatization to make the series more interesting. On the other hand, who’s to say that there aren’t some intense and funny moments in the real world of magazine production?
