Drop the Mic is a new TBS game show that premiered on October 24th and was created by the popular late-night host, James Corden. It’s a pretty funny premise and pits two celebs against each other in a rapping game to see who can come up with the best insults while rapping to a beat. Each show offers two competitions and the shows are hosted by Hailey Baldwin and her co-host Method Man. The two introduce the night’s contestants and keep the show moving along. Here are five things you might not have known about Drop the Mic:
- Hailey Baldwin is the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin, who herself is also an actress on top of being a well-known model who appeared in ad campaigns and on runways for big-name designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Guess. She said that the hardest thing for her when she started the Drop the Mic show was being extremely nervous and learning to smile all the time. After all, it’s that sultry unsmiling stare that made her such a famous model. Personally, she’s into throwback style which is nothing like her wardrobe on the show. She says she’d really like to dress like Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman”.
- Method Man’s real name is Clifford Smith and, besides hosting, he’s an actor, a rapper, and a record producer. He’s also a member of the grou[ Wu-Tang Clan and half of the hip-hop duo called Method Man & Redman. He’s been in several movies, including “Garden State”, “Venom”, “Red Tails”, “How High”, and “The Wackness”. In addition, his TV appearances include parts in “The Wire” and “Deuce”.
- James Corden is also the executive producer of Drop the Mic. Hailey Baldwin characterized her exec producer on the show as “being funny 99.9% of the time”. But, did you know that his name also has an OBE after it, which stands for the well-known British order established in 1917? The order rewards contributions to public service, the arts, and sciences, and work with charitable organizations. And, although that’s pretty special, Corden is probably best known for his Karpool Karaoke, which has featured a host of big stars, including Mariah Carey, Justin Bieber, Adele, Carrie Underwood, Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, and even First Lady Michelle Obama.
- The real stars of the show are the contestants. The first two contestants on the premiere were Corden himself vs. superstar Halle Berry. Everybody knows and loves Halle but until this show and James’ reminders, I never realized how many times she had been married, something that Corden pointed out during their rap battle, while also poking fun at X-Men and Catwoman. In the end, however, Halle won hands-down, especially after her remark about how she has an Oscar and he can suck her monster-balls. All in all, their exchange was pretty hysterical and my family couldn’t stop laughing out loud at those two.
- The second two contestants were Anthony Anderson vs. Usher. They were also pretty funny and frankly Anderson is hardly recognizable now that he’s trimmed down so much. Kudos, Anthony! His best-known performances, albeit way back when he was much heavier, include “Kangaroo Jack”, “Blackish”, and a pretty long run on “Law & Order”. He poked fun at Usher getting caught cheating while Usher fired back by saying that he got cat-fished since this was supposed to be a celebrity battle. In the end, Usher won when the audience gave him louder cheers.
All in all, Drop the Mic is a highly entertaining show and bears watching to see what new guests they come up with and what they’ll have to say about each other.
