Five Reasons There’s Still Hope for a Successful Power Rangers Movie

So do you remember the Power Rangers from your childhood, or are you a new convert to the Mighty Morphin’ Teenagers from Angel Grove?  It doesn’t really matter to be honest because now that the Power Rangers are on another upswing they have a real chance to stay relevant in the cinematic world so long as they remember a few key things and don’t get bogged down in the lurid details that Hollywood and fans seem to love imposing upon their favorite films and characters. This first movie might not have been the absolute pot of gold that producers were hoping for, but let’s be honest, there’s a lot of canon to the Power Rangers that can be pulled from an integrated in new ways to bring life back to the franchise.

So with that being said, implied, and even demanded by some, here are five ways that the Power Rangers can bring about a successful run for their franchise.

5. Keep the tone light.

Keep in mind these are teenagers that are being portrayed in this film. In the original TV show there were limits to where the producers were not willing to cross, largely because it was a kids show. In the film there’s a little more leeway to recognize the seriousness of an alien invasion, but there’s still that need to keep the Power Rangers from being the overburdened heroes that are tasked with protecting an entire planet.

4. Keep in mind that development of the main characters is key to the story.

The Power Rangers didn’t just appear overnight and learn how to deal with their abilities in a day. The new faces assuming the roles of the new Rangers are relatively unknown to most fans, but this is an advantage. They have more room for development, there’s less demands of their acting abilities, and the job is essentially theirs to lose. That alone gives these actors miles of room in which to develop in their roles.

3. Tweak the canon just a little more.

Think of it this way, there are a lot of holes in the Power Ranger story, no matter what version you’re talking about. Why would Rita only send one monster at a time if she’s really bent on destruction? Where do the Power Rangers even get their power from?  These kinds of questions do need to be answered and integrated into the movie to give a little more realism so that fans will continue coming back. After all, monsters in other movies aren’t really known for taking turns when it comes to fighting.

2. Turn it into a spectacle.

Go wild with it. Ramp up the CGI despite what people say, make it a free for all between the Power Rangers and Rita’s nastiest beasts, and by all means make it difficult for the Rangers. While the original show didn’t have CGI or any outstanding special effects it was still a beloved program because IT WENT BEYOND people’s expectations with a story that was out of this world and a truckload of heart that carried the show. If the movie can do that, then it stands a chance at drawing viewers.

1. Bring back the Green Ranger.

You had to know this would be on the list. If you didn’t then shame on you, because in the course of the show the Green Ranger was the penultimate badass that none of the rangers could ever hope to take one on one. It was only when he turned into a good guy that he finally became an asset and not the most feared adversary ever. Bringing back the character of Tommy Oliver would be a dream come true for many fans. And if they could work in a cameo by the original Green Ranger, Jason David Frank, so much the better.

So the Power Rangers are back and their effects are new and improved. If they want any more movies they’ll have to keep up with the development of their characters and by all means allow the Rangers to evolve somehow.
