Stepping into the role of oldest of three children whose lives have been ripe with abuse and neglect, Lawrence showed excellent potential with regard to the acting skills that would eventually bring her an Oscar. Her character Agnes winds up falling for her mother’s pimp actually believing that he loves her back despite his highly abusive behavior towards her mother. This was Jennifer’s first leading role which showed she was more than capable of carrying a film.
