Scottish actor Sean Connery is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the character James Bond. He appeared in the franchise for seven films, the first in 1962, and the last in 1988. He’s also gained in popularity for his amazing acting skills in “The Untouchables,” (1987), with Kevin Costner and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” (2003) with a star studded cast. Many fans were thrilled of his portrayal of Dr. Henry Jones, opposite of Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones films. His role as the ultimate in sexy and savvy James Bond has overshadowed most of his other characters for true Bond fans, but his talents are not limited to a specific genre.
Here are five movies that you totally forgot that Sean Connery was in.
1. “Darby O’Gill and the Little People” (1959)
Sean was a young actor at the time. He played the part of Michael McBride, hopeful suitor of Darby’s daughter. Even though this film was early in his career, it gave fans some pretty big indicators of the talents and assets that Connery possessed. He was handsome and he had a smile that could melt the ice of the North Pole.
2. “Another Time, Another Place” (1958)
Connery played the role of Mark Trevor in this romantic war drama. The Finnish film was the story of an American War news reporter who meets and becomes romantically involved with a BBC news correspondent. It is a star crossed love story directed by Lewis Allen and written by Stanley Mann. The film starred Lana Turner, Glynis Johns and Barry Sullivan and the top billed actors with Sean Connery appearing much lower on the roster.
3. “Macbeth “(1961)
Sean took the lead in the 1961 drama “Macbeth.” The Scottish Lord has a great ambition for power and he chooses evil as the pathway to fulfill his desires. The regicide that he commits on his way to the throne is just the beginning of his reign of terror. His bid to retain power results in civil war for the country and the loss of all that he held dear, just prior to his death. Connery nailed the part of Macbeth with support of co-stars William Needles and Zoe Caldwell.
4. “Time Bandits” (1981)
Sean Connery plays King Agamemnon in this Terry Gilliam directed classic. Young history buff Kevin (Craig Warnock) can scarcely believe it when six dwarfs emerge from his closet one night. Former employees of the Supreme Being (Ralph Richardson), they’ve purloined a map charting all of the holes in the fabric of time and are using it to steal treasures from different historical eras. Taking Kevin with them, they variously drop in on Napoleon (Ian Holm), Robin Hood (John Cleese) and King Agamemnon (Sean Connery) before the Supreme Being catches up with them.
5. Robin and Marian (1976)
Sean Connery played the role of Robin Hood in this film. Many people have completely forgotten about this movie. Many remakes of the film have been created since then. It was really cool for those of us who remembered Connery in this role to see him re-appear in the role of King Richard in the popular film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” with Kevin Costner.
