Brave

Also featuring a feisty and strong-willed princess is the 2012 American computer-animated fantasy film Brave, produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, co-directed by Steve Purcell, and stars the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd and Craig Ferguson. The plot focuses on Merida, a princess of the fictional Scottish Kingdom of Dunbroch who expresses a desire to break tradition and carve her path in life. Unfortunately, her defiance leads to chaos in the kingdom when she seeks help from an eccentric witch, who grants her wish but ends up with a beastly curse she must undo before it destroys her family. In a review by The Hollywood Reporter, they gave particular praise to the voice actors saying, “Working in pronounced Scottish accents that, to be sure, don’t approach the often undecipherable ones heard in Ken Loach films, Scottish actors Macdonald and Connolly are a joy to listen to, as is Thompson, even if too many of the conversations are argumentative in a repetitive vein.”
The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride is a 1987 American fantasy comedy romance film directed and co-produced by Rob Reiner, starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant, and Christopher Guest. William Goldman adapted it from his 1973 novel of the same name. The Princess Bride is a classic fairy tale with a dashing prince, a beautiful princess, an evil witch, and a happily ever after. But it’s also much more than that. The story is set in the fictional country of Florin and follows the adventures of Westley, the farm boy who sets out to rescue his true love Buttercup, from the evil Prince Humperdinck. Along the way, he must contend with swordfights, giants, rodents of unusual size, and an overprotective grandmother. The Princess Bride is a hilarious and heartwarming story that has captivated audiences for generations. In an article published by The Guardian, they commended the film’s non-gender stereotyping in narrating fairytales saying, “Perhaps the most striking thing now about The Princess Bride is the framing device: it’s a story being told by a kindly grandfather, played by Peter Falk – but to a little boy, not a little girl. So there isn’t the same gender stereotyping you’d find if the story were pitched today, and despite the title, The Princess Bride is not a tweeny sleepover movie like Frozen.”
Shrek

Shrek is a 2001 American animated comedy film loosely based on the 1990 picture book of the same name by William Steig. The film stars Mike Myers as the titular character, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad. In the movie, Shrek finds his swamp overrun by fairy tale creatures banished by Lord Farquaad. With the help of Donkey, Shrek agrees to rescue Princess Fiona for Farquaad to regain his swamp. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and spawned an entire franchise of sequels, spin-offs, merchandise, and adaptations. In a review by Common Sense Media, they praised the film’s themes and portrayal saying, “Shrek has the great themes of enduring myths, about believing in yourself, being loved for the person you are, and good triumphing over evil. It is also a delicious satire, tweaking our assumptions about ogres, princesses, rescues, and even fire-breathing dragons.”
Tangled

Some of the elements in The Princess are a nod to the 2010 American 3D computer-animated musical adventure fantasy comedy film Tangled, produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Loosely based on the German fairy tale Rapunzel, the film was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard (in the former’s feature directorial debut) and produced by Roy Conli, with a screenplay written by Dan Fogelman. The film stars the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy. It follows Rapunzel, who, while held captive in a tower, decides to discover the world against her foster mother’s wishes with the help of a thief who takes refuge in her building. Los Angeles Times published a review of Tangled and wrote, “It takes a bit of doing, but when “Tangled’s” core sweetness asserts itself, and the film dares to wear its heart on its sleeve in a climactic scene featuring 46,000 paper lanterns, it’s been worth the wait.”
Ella Enchanted
Having a similar vibe to The Princess, also featuring a great adventure and a charming protagonist, is the 2004 fantasy comedy film Ella Enchanted directed by Tommy O’Haver and written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith. It is loosely based on Gail Carson Levine’s 1997 novel of the same name. Starring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy, the film tells the story of Ella, who has been given the “gift” of obedience by a well-meaning fairy named Lucinda. As a result, she must obey any command given to her, no matter how difficult or dangerous. She then meets Prince Charmont, who helps her on the journey to find Lucinda to break the spell finally. Empire reviewed Ella Enchanted and mentioned Anne Hathaway’s performance, saying, “The comedy isn’t too sharp, though, and there are some inadvisable song-and-dance numbers. But Anne Hathaway delivers another likable performance in a tweenie treat with enough smarts to keep older viewers engaged, too.”
