Five Movies That Freaked us Out About Nuclear Attacks

Nuclear attacks are always just on the horizon is what we are told. Countries that don’t like us have nukes primed and ready to go. As if the thought of nuclear war didn’t freak people out enough we have to hear about it constantly and wonder just when we’re going to see that flash of light and feel the first tingle of heat. Chances are if you’re close enough to the detonation you won’t feel it at all, you’ll be dead before the real effects start to kick in. Yep, the freakout gets worse and worse the more you think about it and the real issue is that this is what we see in movies and on TV.

Here’s a few movies that really go the extra mile in trying to make you wet yourself about nuclear warfare.

5. Terminator 2

It’s not even humans fighting humans this time, it’s the machines deciding that we don’t matter and that we’re the problem. Skynet has a very simple way to solve this issue and it involves mass eliminations in the form of nuclear warheads strategically placed to wipe out as many of the enemy, humans, as possible. So in effect making machines smarter than we are is just hastening our demise.

4. The Sum of All Fears

When nuclear warheads suddenly go missing it’s a big deal. Anything that can create a blast radius that covers miles in a matter of instants is kind of a big concern. This is not to mention the fact that such weapons are usually found in the hands of those that have definite anti-American ideals and don’t really care about who gets hurt in the process.

3. WarGames

There is such a thing as being too smart. Most of the time intelligence is a great thing, it sparks innovation and allows humanity to leap forward in massive bounds that can become a serious boon to our race. But every now and again it needs to be tempered by wisdom, or it will overreach those bounds and that’s typically when the problems arise. The more intelligent you are the longer you need to think about doing certain things.

2. The Peacemaker

“Losing” nukes in the movies is a rather big issue that tends to freak people out because even given the movie aspect of it no one wants to think about what those countries that are against America might be thinking if they could actually get their hands on one. Americans like to boast that those countries would be blasted back to the Stone Age if they tried anything, but the losses incurred would still be horrifying.

1. Thirteen Days

Why does this trip people out? Because the threat of nuclear war was very real at one point and time. Remember a period of time called the Cold War? The Russians still didn’t like us and were actively threatening with nuclear warheads. And what was the reaction to this? Well, just what you’d expect, the US decided to let them know just what would happen if they wanted to throw down.

Nuclear war in movies is greatly exaggerated but it is still capable of freaking people out because the reality is something could happen at any time if someone gets up the nerve to do it.
