Horror TV shows seem to be a new trend sparked by the success of American Horror Story. But now they’re drawing on existing horror properties. We have “Hannibal” on NBC from Silence of the Lambs and also A&E’s “Bates Motel” from Psycho. That got me thinking about what other shows could be gleaned from existing horror films. Here are five ideas I had, both good and bad. Check them out below.
Carrie
I have a hunch that the new Carrie remake with Chloe Moretz will do well enough at the box office for them to consider a show about the girl with pyro/telekinesis. I doubt it would be Moretz in the titular role, but they could find a good sub for them to make a girl about a disturbed girl in high school. Maybe it takes places after she moves to a new place where no one knows her after the events of the film. Not saying it’s a good idea, but it’s a possibility.
The Ring
I always thought that the universe of The Ring was very cool, and I think the concept could be expanded beyond just the original, the American remake, and the (terrible) sequel. What if there were other kids with the same sort of powers with Samara? What ways could they use to tell their story? The mystery would be figuring out the different stories of these kids, maybe one or two per 12 episode season on FX? Just a thought.
Cabin the Woods
Now this is a show that I’d ACTUALLY like to see come to life. Cabin in the Woods was a fascinating film, and it begged the question of what kinds of things happened before the events of the film. There were a ton of other “test sites” alluded to in the film, and I would be curious to see those other stories play out elsewhere. There’s a ton of content here that could be explored, and if they don’t make a new film, a show or miniseries would be great for a look at a prequel.
The Hills Have Eyes
This may be more of an odd concept, but I would really be curious to see how the mutant society functions in the Hills Have Eyes. I know it’s a brutal horror movie, but I think it could work as a dark comedy as we see life through the eyes of the hill people as they trap and torture travelers. Maybe there’s more to them than meets the eye?
Sinister
This is the newest film on this list, but if you’ve seen it, you probably have some idea of why I think that it could be its own TV show. The murderous Bagul (Baghoul?) has a long history of snatching children and murdering people, and there are plenty of new families he could terrorize after the events of the film. I think it could have an American Horror Story vibe to it, though perhaps the property isn’t well known enough yet to attract the required audience.
