Cameos aren’t always expected by the audience and can be incredibly awkward. But after that initial stage things can get a bit interesting, especially if there was an underlying reason for the cameo and it wasn’t just a bit of fun that the director was having at the audience’s expense. In many ways cameos are meant to open a person’s eyes and make them think about why they were suddenly presented with this strange image that might be related or might not, but in many ways it seems a polite nod to some aspect of the story that doesn’t entirely fit but is still entertaining enough that it was considered worthy of being put in.
Here a few cameos that you might think were awkward but in some ways were worth it.
5. Margot Robbie-The Big Short

It might seem absolutely senseless to see Margot Robbie in a bubble bath when you’re talking about the housing crisis of 2008. This could almost be seen as a small piece of fluff in a movie that is about something that really took a lot of people by surprise and was as devastating as any economical crash that’s hit in a long time. But hey, it’s Margot Robbie in a bubble bath.
4. Pamela Anderson-Baywatch

So they got rid of a lot of the original cast and that’s to be expected for something that was almost a complete reboot of the original TV series. But there were two individuals that they simply could not bring themselves to get rid of, and that was the Hoff of course, and Pamela Anderson. You almost expected to see her before Hasslehoff, but putting the Hoff as Mitch’s mentor was actually entertaining, and so was the SUPER slow-mo.
3. Michael Jackson-Men in Black 2

This almost seems like another chance to have made fun of Michael Jackson that he willingly signed on for. Yes, that’s him, no, it’s not an impostor. He willingly signed on for this cameo for some insane reason and obviously was laughed at mercilessly for it. Considering all he’d been through to this point you would have thought that he’d stay away from the camera for a while. But give props to Michael, he still put himself out there.
2. Cate Blanchett-Hot Fuzz

Unless you simply know her eyes, and it’s possible, you probably didn’t even realize it was her at first since she’s kind of there and gone within a few minutes. Apparently even Simon Pegg’s character couldn’t tell who she was by her eyes since he spoke to the wrong person at first and had to turn around. As cameos go this was perhaps the most awkward ever.
1. Hugh Jackman-X-Men First Class

The only way this was awkward was that Erik and Charles just didn’t know how to reply to Logan’s fast and decisive greeting and farewell that was delivered with perfect precision. Wolverine was never a big fan of people getting in his business when he was younger, and he didn’t mind telling people what he thought. This was perhaps one of the best cameos in the history of film, and it kind of helped to make the movie.
Cameos can be a lot of fun to see, but they can also leave you wondering why they were there.
