Peyton Hinckle of CBR has given a few reasons on why Batwoman is better than Batman, why Batman is better than Batwoman, and why both of them are kind of messed up at the same time. The CW’s new show starring Ruby Rose has raised a lot of eyebrows thus far and for a pretty good reason. It’s been seriously dissing the name of Batman in the eyes of some and insinuating that a crime-fighting vigilante that’s been protecting Gotham since before Batwoman was ever an idea might not be good enough. There are definitely a good amount of flaws in Batman’s story and in the character himself that people either don’t want to see, refuse to see, or can’t because they’re simply too biased, but when it comes to the pot calling the kettle black Batwoman doesn’t really have a lot of room to talk since she comes with a wide assortment of her own issues that can be every bit as debilitating and even diminishing when it comes to the strength of her character. Be that as it may however there are a few things that can be done to the show to make it a little more palatable to fans while still keeping its current identity, which is important after all.
Here are just a few things the show might be able to do.
5. Have her actually do some honest detective work.
If you haven’t figured it out by now Batwoman is more of a soldier than anything and will always seem to think in this manner. She knows a bit about surveillance but isn’t nearly the thinker that Batman is. He might not be absolutely perfect but definitely knows how to think around corners a lot better than Batwoman does and as a result he’s not the barge in and take charge type that will simply blunder into something he doesn’t fully understand. By tempering Batwoman’s more impulsive nature and having her figure out just what she’s up against and how to counter it she might actually be able to match the dark knight when it comes to being prepared.
4. Batwoman needs to seriously connect with Gotham.
There’s a reason why there has to be such a feminist lean to this show and it’s quite simple really: NO ONE KNOWS WHO SHE IS. That alone is one of the biggest reasons it feels like that she has to make up some of the lines that have infuriated fans and have sent some people to raising their eyebrows and shaking their head. It’s not the fact that she’s a woman that bothers anyone, it’s the attempt to make it known that she’s a woman and that she feels the need to ‘better’ a man’s role by simply jumping onto the scene and taking care of business in roughly the same way that a man does while wanting to be known as her own person.
3. Who are her connections?
Batman has the Justice League and he’s been influential throughout his career in many ways, while Batwoman really doesn’t have a whole lot of suitable connections that can make her any stronger. She does work with police a lot better than Batman, but between the city cops and Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and the other Justice League members there’s a lot to be said when it comes to who Batman runs with and how he interacts with them. This is something that might take a bit of time to establish, but the point is that she needs those super-powered connections if she really wants to be any more impressive than she’s already been.
2. She needs to be less obsessive.
This is one of Batman’s biggest problems as well and it seems to run in the family since Batwoman is just as focused on what she’s going after and can’t seem to let anything go until she’s had her say and possibly her way. Some might call this a boon since it means she’s firmly dedicated to the role she’s taken on, but in a way it leaves her seeming as though she can’t calm down or take a break from time to time and simply let Gotham be what it is, a city that is constantly on the verge of tearing itself apart despite the fact that it still holds together throughout a lot of things. Sometimes Batwoman isn’t really needed, nor is Batman, but their obsession is simply too great to be overruled.
1. The feminist rhetoric really needs to be toned down.
Remarking that the batsuit will be perfect when it’s fitted to a woman and not wanting a man to get credit for a woman’s work are perhaps two of the most blatant lines that one can speak about when bringing this up since there wasn’t any attempt to hide them and it was pretty obvious what the writers were getting at. Fine, great, she’s a superhero. Can’t she be a superhero without needing to diss the guy whose tech she’s basically stealing? It’s great that she wants to do some good and protect Gotham, but can she do it as a crime fighter and without the rhetoric?
A lot of people want this show to stick around, but if it keeps going like it is then it’s tough to say whether it will or won’t.
