Kathy Bates and drama, Kathy Bates and comedy, it doesn’t matter where you put her, the woman adapts to anything and everything and makes it great. She’s been one of the best actors to come around in years and even when she’s not on top people can go back to some of her greatest hits and remember that she’s one of the actors that helped to make films the way they are today. When it comes to comedy she’s a bit dry but it helps in the sense that she’s not overly goofy, doesn’t need a gimmick, and really just has to act like herself within the situation to make it work. The comedy kind of revolves around her, it doesn’t have to really come from or be pulled from anywhere. It just kind of happens.
She just lets it happen, and that’s the best way really.
5. Waterboy
If you’ve got a mother that’s this tough chances are no one messed with her or you while you were growing up. Unfortunately this kind of mother can also take things a bit too far and all but emasculate her son in the process. Bobby didn’t have a lot of chances to grow up well-adjusted when his mother was attempting to teach him that the outside world was inherently evil.
4. Fried Green Tomatoes
She plays a woman that’s looking for something to change her life and she finds a kindly old lady that shows her nothing but respect and tells her one story after another of her life. Eventually these stories start to change Bates’ character in a positive and very empowering way as she begins to take charge of her life and finds that in doing so she soon realizes what happiness is all about.
3. About Schmidt
I remember when this movie came out that the hot tub scene was all anyone would talk about. So yeah, Jack Nicholson was in it, but the hot tub scene was still what got the most attention. What was that all about? Well, it could have had something to do with the fact that no one had ever seen Kathy Bates do a scene like this before, and we haven’t since either.
2. Bad Santa 2
When Mrs. Claus goes bad she really goes bad. You know if Willy finds it necessary to hit anyone out of the blue it could be for any reason, but the hatred you see in his eyes during the trailer is enough to tell you that he and his mother aren’t on the best of terms. Of course as you watch the movie you come to understand why very quickly, she’s just awful.
1. The Blind Side
Mrs. Sue was a fun character because she didn’t take any lip off of anyone and didn’t bother to hide what she was feeling most times. She was a nice character but she wasn’t about to take any guff no matter who it was she was talking to. Plus, she seemed like a very caring woman as well in this role.
Kathy Bates is a great actor. (mic drop)
