Five of Our Favorite Serious Jason Segel Movie Scenes

Let me say first off that these were kind of hard to find since Jason Segel seems to be all about comedy.  The guy is genuinely funny so it’s kind of difficult to find moments in which he’s not trying to make someone laugh. Of course his kind of funny is actually a little different than a lot of people might be used to since he can go so deadpan at a moment’s notice. That seems to be the way that a lot of comedians do things anymore but there are times when it is uproariously funny. These scenes however are not quite as comical and are, as I’ve said, a lot harder to come by.

Some of them might seem a bit funny, but it’s definitely a subjective sense of humor.

5. The End of the Tour

This movie is as serious as it gets for Segel it would seem. Acting as a noted writer and teacher named David Foster Wallace who was thought to be one of the most innovative writers in the past two decades. The man that managed to interview him, David Lipsky, is the center of the story since it is from his memoirs that Wallace’s thoughts and ideas are finally brought forth.

4. The Discovery

The afterlife is meant to remain a secret for a reason. Once you cross over there is no need to cross back or to attempt to change things. In this film Segel plays the son of the man that discovers proof of an afterlife. The problem is that the afterlife is another plane of existence, and to reach people begin commit suicide in massive numbers. Sometimes the mystery is better than the facts.

3. 11.14

This is one of the many interesting and engaging convergence films that has been created, including an all-star cast that take part in the many events that begin to take place right around 11:14. It’s been labeled a black comedy but in truth it just looks like another drama that attempts to work comedy into its running time without much success.

2. This Is The End

This is supposed to be an apocalyptic comedy but Segel supposedly doesn’t last too long. This scene is perhaps one of the least funny in the entire movie despite the fact that Kevin Hart is laughing like a madman at something that Segel is saying. More or less this film is kind of funny but Segel’s part in it is not quite as humorous as usual.

1. This Is 40

So yes, this is technically a comedy, but Segel’s role as the hands-on fitness instructor is played with such seriousness that he really doesn’t come off as comedic but instead a little creepier and even lecherous in some ways. He’s almost boasting about the work he does with women and how he makes them into something they weren’t before they came to him. In other words he’s kind of a jerk in this movie.

It was hard to find these roles and more than a little difficult to think of Segel as anything but a funny man. If you happen to know of any other non-serious roles please feel free to share.
