Superhero movies are extremely popular with moviegoers and often achieve both critical and commercial success. The majority of superhero movies are American or are a collaboration of a United States production company with input from people in the movie industry from other countries. It is these movies from the United States are probably the best-known. However, there are many more superhero movies that were created outside of the United States and these are just as great to watch. Here are five crazy superhero movies from outside the United States.
1. Guardians (2017)
‘Guardians’ is a Russian superhero movie that was released in Russia on February 23, 2017, and then on DVD in the United States on September 5, 2017. It was written by Andrei Gavrilov and directed by Sarik Andreasyan. It is about a team of superheroes that was created in the Cold War and has members from the different nationalities that represent the USSR. Initially, the movie was a hit at the box office but the poor critical response led to box office figures dropping dramatically. The movie stars Sebastian Sisak, Sanzhar Madiyev, Anton Pampushnyy, and Alina Lanina, amongst others.
2. Supergirl (1984)
‘Supergirl’ is a British superhero movie that is based on a character of the same name from DC Comics. The title role is played by Helen Slater and others who star in this movie include Mia Farrow, Faye Dunaway, and Peter O’Toole. Also in this movie, Marc McClure plays Jimmy Olsen which is the same character he plays in the ‘Superman’ films. The movie was written by David Odell and directed by Jeannot Szwarc. It was poorly received by critics and was a box office flop.
3. Night is Day (2012)
Written and directed by Fraser Coull, ‘Night is Day’ is an independent feature film from Scotland. It was shot in Glasgow and is about a man in his twenties called Jason McKenzie. The main character is a super-powered vigilante who discovers he has the special powers of foresight and lightning. This micro budget movie stars Chris Summers and Kirsty Anderson along with a local cast.
4. Ultraman: The Next
Ultraman is a Japanese superhero character and franchise. It was decided that the brand should be reinvented to make it more appealing to an older audience. To achieve this, there was a three-phase experiment called the ‘Ultra N Project’. ‘Ultraman: The Next’ was part of this process. It is a sci-fi tokusatsu superhero movie that was written by Keiichi Hasegawa and directed by Kazuya Konaka. The main stars of this movie include Tetsuya Bessho, Kyoko Toyama, and Nae Yuuki.
5. Jian Bing Man (2015)
This Chinese movie is a parody of superhero films. Da Peng directed this movie and co-wrote it with Su Biao. He also starred in Jian Bing Man with other cast members including Mabel Yuan and Liu Yan. It is about a man who is famous for his television series and becomes involved with a gangster so he can buy his girlfriend an engagement ring. He is made to create a superhero movie starring the gangster’s brother and ‘Jian Bing Man’ is about the production of this movie. Jean-Claude Van Damme makes a cameo appearance as himself.
