Video game movies have been a virtual nightmare for the movie studios but many (including myself) are convinced that eventually they’re going to get it right. While Assassin’s Creed didn’t necessarily “get it right” many argue that the film was a step in the right director. And now with a reboot of Lara Croft it’s pretty obvious that the film industry is not giving up on adapting video games into movies. The latest piece of news on the video game to movie front concerns Gears of War.
The film adaptation just took a step in the right direction by hiring the guy who is writing all the Avatar sequels to write the Gears of War movie. According to Deadline, Universal and Microsoft Studios have hired Shane Selarno to write the adaptation’s script, which will be an all new story set in the Gears universe. Selarno is currently writing James Cameron’s Avatar saga (handling parts two through five,) and his past credits include Savages, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, Shaft, oh and Armageddeon. Selarno also wrote a few episodes of New York Undercover.
Gears of War is a logical choice for video game to movie adaptation because you don’t have to make too far of a reach. Military games are a no brainer because frankly anyone can make a military movie. How good it will be is obviously the next question. However, I do think the film took a step in the right direction by hiring Selarno. We’ll keep you posted of any new developments.
