Sequels of popular movies always tend to be a bit darker, but that’s literally the case in the follow-up to 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey, which is titled Fifty Shades Darker. The sequel features the previous movie’s stars, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, returning as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, as their characters’ relationship becomes even more romantic and twisted, at least juding by the first trailer for the film, which was released today. Per Universal, Fifty Shades Darker follows “a wounded Christian Grey” as he “tries to entice a cautious Ana Steele back into his life.” However, Anastasia “demands a new arrangement before she will give him another chance. As the two begin to build trust and find stability, shadowy figures from Christian’s past start to circle the couple, determined to destroy their hopes for a future together.”
In addition to Dornan and Johnson, other returning Fifty Shades of Grey cast members include Marcia Gay Harden, Jennifer Ehle, Luke Grimes, Rita Ora, Victor Rasuk, Eloise Mumford, and Max Martini. Meanwhile, Kim Basinger, Hugh Dancy, Bella Heathcote, and Eric Johnson are all newcomers joining the Fifty Shades Darker cast. Fifty Shades Darker is directed by James Foley (Fear, House of Cards), written by Niall Leonard, and based on the novel by E.L. James. The movie will attempt to match the success of its predecessor, which grossed more than $560 million worldwide. Fifty Shades Darker hits theaters on Valentine’s Day 2017.
