It does seem kind of inevitable that such a show would come to pass since the First Lady position in the White House is something that many people feel has been taken for granted for a long time. After all, being the president of the United States is a highly visible position, but being the First Lady is nothing to sneeze at since the women that have supported presidents throughout the last two centuries and more have had to evolve along with the presidency as well. Bethany Guerrero of ScreenRant seems optimistic that this show will take off in a big way since the first women to be showcased will be Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, and Michelle Obama, three very influential women that had the privilege of being First Lady during their lives. Their accomplishments and their point of view are going to be on display in this show as it comes to light just what the First Lady has to go through and what is expected of them while they’re standing alongside their husbands during each term. What it might reveal will no doubt be used in an entertaining and enlightening manner, but it’s also fair to say that there will be a bit of argument from some people over just how revealing the show really is.
So far all we really know is that there are three episodes that have been given the green light, and that Viola Davis will be playing the part of Michelle Obama. Mekishana Pierre of PopSugar is also fully on board for this show to get underway, expressing a desire to see more episodes approved so that the personal stories of the First Lady’s that have graced the White House throughout the years can be told. With that in mind this does seem like a very insightful story that’s going to delve into a part of the White House that we don’t normally get to see, but it also seems like it might open itself to a lot of criticism as well. Anything positive and willing to see the positive notes that this show could bring might be welcome since honestly it seems wiser to simply nod your head and say that this will be a good and worthy show that should get the chance to expand and move forward with more episodes. However if it doesn’t one can only imagine what kind of criticisms will be voiced and what might be said of the industry where women still seem to be lacking in equality.
First Ladies does deserve it’s shot as a show and it does deserve to showcase a part of life in the White House that we don’t get to hear about all the time. After all, throughout history a lot of strong men have been made this way and have been aided in maintaining their strength by women that are equally strong if not stronger. If this show doesn’t perform well, and it’s kind of hard to believe it won’t, the fallout seems as though it might be quite terrible on one end and entirely accusatory in many ways, while on the other end it might be met with a shrug and little more. It seems like a big risk but it’s also a chance to show something that could inspire a great many people. In our lifetime after all Michelle Obama has been been a very strong and capable woman that has been seen at her husband’s side more often than not and has been very influential during her time in the White House. Were she to run for the office of president of the United States it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise and it would likely be a decision met with a great many supporters that would gladly see her standing in front of the nation delivering one address after another.
It would seem that this show is trying to remain as neutral as it can, but in truth it doesn’t seem as though this might happen since the very idea of remaining neutral where politics are concentrated the heaviest seems like an impossibility that can’t be guarded against. There’s no doubt that the show will turn a lot of heads and make a lot of people sit up and pay attention, but it’s also likely to draw its fair share of criticism. Why? That’s pretty simple, not everyone is a fan of Michelle Obama no matter how many people believe that she was the best First Lady we’ve had in a while. She had class and style, but like it or not there wasn’t a universal love for her anymore than there’s been a universal love for any First Lady. It’s going to be interesting to see how the show goes and whether or not it will expand and be given more episodes.Viola Davis
