She plays the role of a widow. She’s lost her beloved husband, and she’s in the process of grieving. However, she also realizes that the life she lived before her husband’s death did not always satisfy her. She’s navigating a lot of new water, but she’s also trying to be the person she feels she needs to be. It turns out that her sex life is one she’s not entirely happy with.
We don’t know the specifics of what she and her husband did in the bedroom before his death, but her character is not entirely thrilled. She’s dissatisfied and hires a young man who helps her in the bedroom. He is a sex worker if you will. He works hard to ensure she learns a thing or two, and you can guess where this is going. It’s not a sex film. But, it’s also not a romantic comedy. It’s both. And, it’s good.

This Hulu movie raises a lot of important questions. Namely, how do you find satisfaction in life you were previously unhappy with? How do you find the balance you did not know you were looking for all those years before? The film is set primarily in a hotel room. Emma Thompson’s character, Nancy, needs a place to host her new friend – Leo Grande. She hired him to show her a thing or two. Get your mind out of the gutter because while she technically did hire him to show her that thing – she’s also looking for more. Nancy is a woman who wants to connect with herself. She needs to find her own level of intimacy, both emotionally and physically, but she cannot do it on her own.
Is This Just A Dirty Movie?
No. it’s not. Once again, Emma Thompson’s new movies teach us a thing or two. She is teaching us the importance of getting to know ourselves, learning to let go, and of learning to connect with ourselves. You cannot do any of that if you are focused on connecting with someone else first, and we are hopeful that this movie will bring a little more to the table. Her performance is, as always, stellar. She brings just the right amount of comedy and wit without being cheesy. She’s an actress who knows how to be the character and lets nothing get in her way.
Sex is abundant. However, this is not a movie that we would classify as dirty. It’s more of a movie that offers some lessons. It’s tastefully done in a way that makes it educational and hilarious, and entertaining. Both she and her co-star are equal parts involved in this one, and it was done with class. If you’re worried you’re turning on a borderline inappropriate movie, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that it’s not quite what you were expecting.
