Marion is also close to Tom’s seemingly best friend, Patrick Hazlewood (David Dawson) after they quickly bond over their shared interest in art.

However, things go awry when Marion confirms her suspicion about her husband’s sexuality and his true relationship with Patrick. Set in the mid-1900s and with homosexuality still a criminal offense, Tom and Patrick do their best to keep their affair a secret. However, Patrick is arrested as they return after their shared trip to Venice. He’s tried and sentenced to prison for two years.

Back in the present day, and while still agreeing to nurse Patrick, who’s suffering from a debilitating stroke, in their home, Marion confesses she had a hand in Patrick’s incarceration. She reported the affair to win back her husband. Consumed with guilt, she leaves Tom, telling him their marriage has always been based on lies. For their performance, Emma Corrin won the Tribute Award for Performance at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.
