You wouldn’t think it looking at and listening to him, but rapper Eminem once spent 10 days in a coma due to an act of bullying. Marshall didn’t have an easy life growing up. First his father split and then he and his mother moved around a lot, to better themselves as she would claim, but also to the detriment of Marshall since so many moves in so little of a time can have a seriously detrimental effect on a child’s upbringing. There’s a very real reason why Marshall felt that the world couldn’t be trusted, but eventually he came out and found a way to deal with the world on his own terms. He got very involved in drawing, superheroes, and the rich fantasy life that allowed him to escape into a world where he could be the most powerful and most influential person around. This made him very lonely and very much the outcast of any group. In fact the only real friend he had was his uncle Ronnie, who was only two months older than he was. Needless to say that the didn’t have a very stable upbringing.
The worst part came in 1982 when a much bigger student managed to corner Marshall in a bathroom just before launching a snowball with a heavy object buried inside, striking him in the head and laying him on the spot. Marshall was left on the ground, bleeding, and wasn’t found until hours later. His mother had to rush him to the hospital as he was in the middle of a seizure when she found him. He went into a coma for 10 days and during that time every doctor that looked at him just about gave up hope that he’d recover. Once he did wake up however the real hardship began since he had to relearn just about everything, from his basic motor functions and up. He was essentially helpless since the trauma to his head had caused enough damage that he suffered from nightmares, headaches, and other issues that would plague him for years to come. It’s also been said that brain damage can create a very aggressive streak where none might have existed before. In Marshall however the propensity to be aggressive seems to have already been there, but according to his family he was more likely to sulk and go off on his own rather than take his aggression out on anyone.
Perhaps that’s why he’s the angry, aggressive rapper he’s been for so long, at least in part. Can anyone remember what his first albums were like when they came out? He sounded like a whack job to some but he sounded like an angry and extremely teed off individual to others. It sounds like this might be a very good reason why Marshall is so aggressive. Brain trauma can change the way an individual thinks, acts, and even reacts to the world around them. Marshall has certainly shown that he’s not afraid to speak his mind, but the trauma might have just unlocked that potential rather than creating it.
