There is no denying the fact that Elton John is one of the most iconic and musicians of all time, and that is why many fans are completely shocked at the announcement that the singer will be retiring from touring. For nearly five decades, the world has had the pleasure of lining up to enter stadiums and coliseums to hear Elton John serenade them with a neverending list of hits that he has written and performed through the years. That touring career is coming to an end.
At the core of the performer’s decision is a very simple and logical reason behind his decision – he wants to spend more time with his children. He said that before the adoption of the children by him and his partner, he was sure that touring and performing is what he would be doing for the remainder of his life, but the children changed everything. Yep, children definitely have the capacity to change your plans – in a good way. In an interview with Robin Roberts, the music legend revealed that he simply does not have the desire to travel away from his children in the manner in which touring demands.
John revealed that when it comes to deciding on whether he will tour and play shows in sold-out arenas or spend time with his beautiful kids, it is a no-brainer. The boys, Zachary, 7, and Elijah, 5, were adopted by John and his partner late in their lives, and it is the first time that he has ever experienced what it feels like to be a father. He admits that being a father is an awesome feeling and an awesome responsibility that he plans to honor in every way possible. When you really give it some serious consideration, it speaks volumes to the character of Elton John because music has been his life. I grew up listening to Elton John, and I am 50 now, so that gives you an idea of how much this man has given to the world of music.
Elton did give his fans something to look forward to during his interview with Robin Roberts. He said that he plans to go out with a bang – making his final tour the greatest of his career. I can definitely see that happening. I can tell you from experience that seeing someone who has been at the top of their craft for so long knowing it is the last time you will see them has an electrifying energy to it. I have attended my share of farewell performances by athletes, singers, and actors. I can guarantee you that the arenas will be feeling with emotions as he sings all of the fan-favorites for the last time on tour.
I am sure that there will be special appearances here and there, but to be traveling away from the kids for weeks at a time before seeing them briefly and then flying off again is too much for John to endure. John did want to ensure that his fans understand that his retirement from touring is not a retirement from music. He will still write and record music, but he will not be touring any longer. I think that the fans are willing to make that sacrifice.
