8 Movie Sequels That Surpass Their Originals

It’s often said that nothing can beat the original. However, there are instances where the sequel not only matches the original but even surpasses it. Here are eight movie sequels that, for various reasons, outshine their predecessors and have become our go-to choice when it comes to rewatching.

8. Paranormal Activity 2

While the first Paranormal Activity film was a gut-wrenching experience, the sequel managed to be more enjoyable to watch, mainly because the secret was already out. The way the plots intertwined and the stories connected was impressive. It’s a great watch for those who saw the first film, but it might be a bit confusing for newcomers.

7. Scream 2

The first Scream movie is a classic that we can watch anytime it’s on TV. However, the sequel managed to outdo the original with even wittier commentary from the characters, a fantastic plot to reveal the killer, and another memorable opening scene.

6. The Mighty Ducks 2

It’s true that the Ducks wouldn’t be what they are today without the original film. However, the second installment is just so much more enjoyable than the District-5 days. With new characters and a more mature plot, the Junior Goodwill Games angle that Disney took to feature the Minnesota Miracle Man and his crazy hockey gang was a great move.

5. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

The Griswold family introduced us to Cousin Eddie and the chaos a family trip can cause, but it wasn’t until the Christmas version of the series that we truly appreciated how dysfunctional family get-togethers can be. To this day, it still features one of the best rants in movie history (NSFW).

4. Ghostbusters 2

We adore the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Sigourney Weaver’s character being possessed as Zuul in the original Ghostbusters, but the sequel has a better plot. With even more hilarious one-liners and the idea that there’s a river of slime beneath New York City that makes people unruly towards each other, it’s hard not to love this sequel.

3. Toy Story 2

When Toy Story 2 was released, many of us thought it could never come close to the originality of the first film. However, thanks to fantastic storytelling and even more innovative animation, the sequel managed to surpass our expectations. There’s just something about this movie that makes it impossible not to get caught up in it, no matter our age.

2. The Dark Knight

Although not the original sequel in the Batman series, The Dark Knight is the second installment in the newer generation with Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader. With an incredible opening scene that you’d regret missing if you were late to the theater and a villain who made you squirm at how evil he really was, this film has everything a great movie needs.

1. The Godfather Part II

As an Italian, I’m always excited when someone considers watching one of the Godfather films. The plot of the sequel, featuring the Corleone family, is absolutely riveting. The addition of Robert De Niro alongside the already established Al Pacino character was an ingenious move, making The Godfather Part II a true masterpiece.
