Allie Gemmil from ScreenRant is probably saying what a lot of people are thinking when it comes to Frozen 2, that Elsa and Anna’s parents are still alive. There are a few theories out there that have started to circulate and that are catching on, but the idea that they’re alive is the central theme as of now since it seems to tie everything we know about the movie at this point together. The truth is that the implied death of their parents was an easy way to move the story forward, as it allowed even further conflict to grow where there was already a mounting problem since Elsa was having trouble controlling her powers. Having their parents be presumed lost at sea only exacerbated things as Elsa had to step up and be queen at a time in her life when she was feeling most vulnerable.
But now it would seem that further trouble is coming to Arrendelle and Elsa will finally have to confront the origins of her past and possibly discover just where her powers came from. So far one theory that holds a lot of water and would explain the likelihood that their parents are alive is that their parents knew about Elsa’s power from the start. It could have been something passed down throughout their bloodlines, a curse, or both, but the calmness with which they handled the situation when Elsa accidentally struck Anna with her power didn’t cause the king and queen to panic, and it was rather convenient that the king knew just where to look for the information they needed to heal Anna. This seems to imply that the king and queen knew full well the back story behind Elsa’s power and had been expecting something like this, or were at least ready for it throughout the years. As far as their parents surviving this is foreshadowed in a big way by the fact that one of the trolls tells Elsa that she has to venture beyond the borders of Arrendelle to the north to discover the truth about her power and where it came from. It might be more implied than anything, but there’s a hint that her parents might be in the north and have perhaps even made a place for themselves there.
But then that leaves the obvious question. Why wouldn’t they come back? This might seem devious in a way or self-sacrificing depending on the way one looks at it. Since this story has a lot to do with prophecies and the emergence and maturation of Elsa’s power it stands to reason that her parents might have been seeking a way to help her or, barring that, were simply convinced that staying away would be a better idea. The one theory echoed by John Boone of ET that kind of gets shot down is that they ended up giving birth to another child, who came to be known as Tarzan. For one, their ship wasn’t on fire, it was sunk, and two, it doesn’t seem as though the time periods were the same since you don’t tend to see a lot of photographs or evidence of such technology in Frozen. It’s an interesting theory to be sure, but not one that really stands up. Instead it would seem likely that their parents stayed away for a specific purpose since many couldn’t possibly think of their parents simply staying away because they were afraid or ashamed to come back for some reason.
There are still people that are of the mind that Frozen 2 didn’t really need to happen since despite the fact that there wasn’t a lot of closure at the end of the first movie, it ended on a good note and in a happy place with the sisters reunited, Kristoff definitely in the picture, and everyone more or less happy with how things had turned out. But obviously someone along the line had an idea that the origin of Elsa’s powers needed to come out, and many people are on board with this since it’s never been explained. Some things don’t need to be explained, but in this current era it would seem that people want to see the magic behind the curtain and they want to know just what’s going on with anything that doesn’t have a well-defined origin. If this was any other movie than Frozen you can almost bet that people wouldn’t care as much or would possibly be posting their disdain for the need of those that just have to know every little thing about their favorite characters. But given that it IS Frozen, the idea does more than just deliver Elsa’s full story, it brings back a favorite that swept the world in a big way when it was first released. Honestly my prediction at this point is that Frozen 2 won’t do quite as well, but it will still make a huge profit.
