Deadpool & Wolverine will land in theaters on July 26, 2024. After it was officially announced that Hugh Jackman will join Ryan Reynolds as his classic character Wolverine, a plethora of trailers and teasers have landed. With each promotional video, a fresh new glimpse has been added.
In the latest teaser, released on June 8, 2024, a new character is unveiled through a rather ambiguous shot. The snippet was posted to Ryan Reynolds‘ official YouTube page for Best Friend’s Day, with the following caption: “I hope everyone gets to work with their best friend at least once in their lifetime. I know I can’t wait to finally do it”. However, the focus has now shifted to the mysterious female legs that walk towards the camera mid-way through the trailer. As of yet, speculation is that this character is Lady Deadpool. So, let’s explore that possibility and discuss everything we know.
Who Is Lady Deadpool?
Lady Deadpool, also known as Wanda Wilson, is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics universe. She is a female version of the mercenary Deadpool, and is actually a clone of him created by the villainous organization HYDRA. Lady Deadpool’s backstory reveals that she was created as a part of a project to clone the “perfect” assassin, with the intention of using her as a weapon. However, she eventually broke free from her programming and developed her own personality, becoming a complex and chaotic character in her own right.
Lady Deadpool’s connection to Deadpool is twofold: she is a physical clone of him, and she also shares his regenerative abilities and tendency to push the boundaries of sanity. Throughout her appearances in the comics, Lady Deadpool has often clashed with Deadpool, with their tumultuous relationship reflecting their shared struggles with identity and morality. Despite their differences, the two have also shown a deep affection for each other, making their bond one of the most intriguing and complex in the Marvel Universe.
Will Lady Deadpool Appear in Deadpool & Wolverine?
Judging by the trailer, it appears that Lady Deadpool will certainly feature in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, how substantial the character’s part will be is unknown. As of yet, not much has been revealed about the plot of the movie other than the fact that Deadpool and Wolverine will team up and will take on the cunning villain Cassandra Nova (played by Emma Corrin). Marvel are doing a fantastic job at building momentum for the movie, dropping new segments of footage with each trailer or teaser, while not giving away much in the plot department.
In the latest teaser, much of the footage has already been seen, apart from the apparent footage of Lady Deadpool. So, to hint at such a major character making an appearance and not delivering when the movie lands would be extremely anti-climatic and would likely anger a lot of fans. With that said, we can only assume that the character will have ample screen time. If we dissect the short clip, the outfit is definitely matching of Lady Deadpool’s iconic costume. Also, she graces the frame at what looks like to be an intense action scene, walking through smoke and sparks. So, if her appearance is only a cameo, it may be in one of the movie’s biggest scenes – perhaps the final act/showdown.
Who Could Play the Character?
Trying to identify an actress sheerly by their legs is a rather difficult task. However, many fans of Deadpool are of course attempting to do so – another clever marketing technique from Marvel Studios in their ever-growing promotional campaign. Before the new teaser landed, there was growing speculation that Taylor Swift would be appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine. Swift is close friends with Ryan Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively, and is also a hug fan of the Deadpool movies. This became apparent in 2016 when she famously dressed up as the character for Halloween. Furthermore, outside of her music career, Swift has already displayed a penchant for acting, starring in Cats in 2019 and Amsterdam in 2022.
Another obvious choice to play Lady Deadpool is Blake Lively. Already an established actress, Reynolds’ wife could be a perfect casting choice. The happily-married couple are known to roast each other on social media through hilarious banter, with neither holding back. So, it would be interesting to see this dynamic brought to the screen. If this casting came to be true, it would mark the first time the two have worked together on film since 2011’s disastrous flop, Green Lantern. Therefore, they would also be redeeming themselves and possibly poking fun at the failure through Deadpool’s iconic tongue-in-cheek humour displayed in the first two movies. Until Lady Deadpool is officially announced, here’s a deep dive into the villain of Deadpool & Wolverine.
