A Magical Disney Night on Dancing With the Stars

Last night was one of my favorite nights of the Dancing With the Stars season: Disney Night! Not only did I enjoy seeing the stars dancing their way through Disney songs, but I also appreciated the small details. Cinderella’s castle at the beginning, and how each of the dancers, both in pairs and after commercial breaks, were made to look like the Disney characters they were supposed to be singing as. Can you blame me if I watched the show more for the Disney magic and less for the dancers for one night?

The Half-Way Point in The Competition

I did watch it for the dancers, though. Tonight marked the half-way point in the competition. Not that I doubt the show or Tom, but it feels like I just started reviewing this show two weeks ago! However, what made that believable for me was witnessing how strong a bond has formed between stars and their dancers. This connection was evident last night in their packages. When Suzanne wanted to give up on her performance, Tony encouraged her to go on because he knew she wasn’t a quitter! When Noah didn’t think he could do his dance routine, Sharna told him to suck it up because she was going to be his princess tonight.

I think Patti’s story touched me most deeply. Her knee had been bothering her since week two, and Artem didn’t want to do anything that might injure it further. She said to him, “I’m letting you know. I’ll never let you down!” Oh my God, Patti! You get my vote right there.

Highlights of the Night

Watching some of the couples dance was more enjoyable than others. I’m not sure what it was, whether it was an illusion or an actual dress, but Patti’s dance started off very cool. Check it out online to see what I mean. I completely agreed with what Carrie Ann said tonight commenting on her dance, “It was like watching the Fairy Godmother of Dancing with the Stars!”

You also cannot fault Mark. Low score or high, each week he seems to go above and beyond what is called for. This week, he did a dance from Alice in Wonderland and went all out in full make-up as the White Rabbit! He couldn’t even breathe through his nose.

Noah and Sharna may not be my favorite to win, but it’s understandable if they do. I enjoyed their dance this week—maybe because I enjoy watching him dance or maybe because the song he danced to is one of my favorite songs ever. It did seem like they focused on Sharna this week, but the judges didn’t seem to mind.

Finally, it was really good to have Derek and Nastia finish off Disney Night because they seemed to recreate one of the songs from Frozen and get almost a perfect score. It was cool how Nastia decided to embrace a different side of herself, and it showed.

The Not-So-Magical Moments

Like I said earlier, some dances didn’t quite capture my attention as much. Rumer and Val’s dance simply could not hold my attention. While I did think that her package was cute (how she wanted to be a villain as opposed to a princess, how she used her pool to train, etc.), their samba didn’t do it for me. Also, while Suzanne and Tony’s performance didn’t bore me, it also didn’t keep me from looking at my watch.

Finally, the pair who did not get their happily ever after this week (I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist) was Suzanne and Tony. Like I said last week, this was not the team that I would’ve sent home. Oh well.
