Shifty Shellshock, the frontman of the rock band Crazy Town, has tragically passed away at the age of 49. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that the musician, whose real name is Seth Binzer, died at his Los Angeles home on Monday, June 24. As of now, the cause of death for the Butterfly singer has not been disclosed.
Binzer’s passing marks the end of a turbulent yet impactful career in the music industry. Known for his dynamic presence and significant contributions to Crazy Town‘s success, particularly with their hit song Butterfly, Binzer’s influence in the early 2000s music scene was profound. His death has left fans and the music community mourning the loss of a unique talent.
Binzer’s Music Journey and Rise to Fame
Binzer began his journey in the music industry alongside vocalist and rapper Epic Mazur in 1992. The duo formed the group Brimstone Sluggers, which eventually evolved into the rock band Crazy Town in Los Angeles in 1995. Along with group members Rust Epique, James Bradley Jr., Doug Miller, Adam Goldstein, and Antonio Lorenzo “Trouble” Valli, they released their debut album The Gift of Game in 1999.
Success with “Butterfly”
The band’s song Butterfly, the third single from their debut album, skyrocketed them to fame and became a 2000s anthem. The track even featured in the film Something’s Gotta Give, starring Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. Following this success, the group released a second album, Darkhorse, in 2002. However, it failed to reach the same levels of acclaim, leading to the band’s breakup.
Solo Career and Later Years
After Crazy Town’s initial breakup, Binzer pursued a solo career and released the album Happy Love Sick in 2004. He also collaborated with English music producer Paul Oakenfold on the song Starry Eyed Surprise, which reached No. 6 on the U.K. music charts in 2002. The band reformed in 2015 under the name Brimstone Sluggers and later became known as Crazy Town X after Mazur’s departure in 2017.
Personal Struggles and Legal Issues
Throughout his career, Binzer battled substance abuse and appeared on VH1 shows Celebrity Rehab and Sober House. In 2012, he was hospitalized after losing consciousness and falling into a coma, from which he later recovered. That same year, he faced charges of battery and drug possession. In 2022, he was arrested on DUI charges, and in 2023, he reportedly got into an altercation with Crazy Town guitarist Bobby Reeves after one of their shows.
