When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first appeared in comics in 1984, everyone was intrigued and hooked at the same time. It was an odd concept at first; four turtles that were adopted, taught, and trained by a Japanese mutant rat is a fairly odd storyline to begin with, but it was just as equally creative and entertaining. A TV show based on the comic books came out in 1987 and continued until 1996. The shows introduced many non-comic book readers to the four ninjas, and soon enough, the four turtles became part of an international culture. In 1990, the first movie based on the comic and TV series came out. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the movie was an instant success, and it was all due to the characters themselves, which were already beloved at this point.
The second movie followed just a year after in 1991. TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze followed the four ninjas again–Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael–alongside Splinter in their fight against Shredder. It was a direct continuation of the first film. However, in this second movie, the turtles were shown using mostly their hands in combat instead of their weapons. There were other differences as well. Many fans gave the movie mixed reviews because they believed that the second movie was a clear departure from the darker tone of the first movie. The lightheartedness of The Secret of the Ooze may not seem like it faired well with many, but the box office proved otherwise.
The movie was successful enough to garner a third installation. In addition, the franchise itself remains to be loved by many as it continues to grow today with reboots of both the show and the movies. It’s been a while since we’ve all seen TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze, but here’s a refresher for you.
