When it comes to the plot of The Summer I Turned Pretty; we are not seeing anything new. Not to say anything negative about the show. The books and the show are good, but the plot is nothing different than what we’ve seen before. We saw it on The Vampire Diaries when Elena fell in love with a good guy (can you say that about a Vampire?) Stefan and later with his bad-boy brother Damon. Is she a good guy or a bad guy kind of gal? We know she ultimately ends up with the bad boy, and we didn’t hate it because Damon was the best choice for her – he’s not nearly as bad a boy as he’d have you believe. But, when it comes to Belly’s choice between Conrad and Jeremiah, things are slightly unclear. Does she go with the bad boy or the good one? Let’s find out.
Brothers in a Love Triangle
Conrad and Jeremiah are brothers. Aren’t they always when it comes to a good boy/bad boy love triangle? They are at their summer house with their mother, her best friend, and her best friend’s kids (Steven and Belly), but it’s the summer of change. Newly 16 and suddenly so grown up, Belly is someone who gets attention from Conrad and Jeremiah. They’ve known one another since they were kids. They’ve grown up together. They are the best of friends. But they’re all grown up now, and everyone has taken notice. Even though one of the brothers has a girlfriend – he’s less into her than she is into him – they are both taking notice of Belly, and suddenly it’s every man for himself and both brothers left behind.
Who is the Bad Boy?
Conrad and Jeremiah, ironically, are both good kids. They both love their mom. They both love their friends. They are both good people. However, Belly has always had a thing for Conrad. He’s slightly older than she is at 17, and he’s always been a good friend. But, this summer, he’s the bad guy. Why? Because he’s the one who found out his mother has terminal cancer and is dying. Conrad and Jeremiah are there to spend one last summer with their mother – and their mother doesn’t want them to know. He knows, though, and his entire life has changed.
So, he’s not a bad boy. He’s a young man who learned his mother is dying, and he has no one to talk to about it. He is dealing with the most devastating thing in life, and there is not a person on the earth who knows about it save for his mother. And she doesn’t know that he knows, and he wants to help make sure she is having a good time by not telling her. He’s losing his mother, and he is not able to be himself. Brooding might be a good word, but it’s heartbroken and devastated we know it is a better one. He is not a bad person, but he’s unable to be himself.
Jeremiah Could Be Bad
When Jeremiah realizes his feelings for Belly are more than a friendship, he simply tells her. He is there for her. He’s a good friend. He’s a good person. He is just a nice kid, and he proves it time and time again. He also has no clue his mother is dying. His brother doesn’t tell him. So, at the end of the day, there is always a chance that Jeremiah could be just as much of a bad boy as his brother. He simply does not have heartache and the crushing feeling of this horrible secret weighing on him daily. It’s a lot for his brother, but he doesn’t know.
Who Should Belly Choose?
At the end of the day, we have to speak up about this one. It’s easy for us to say, though. She should choose Jeremiah. He’s always there for her. He is always putting her first. Despite the fact that we don’t think Conrad is really a bad boy, he’s a young man going through something terrible, and he’s made his priorities clear. He forgets about Belly. He’s mean to her. He takes out his anger and frustration on her. Jeremiah doesn’t do these things. He shows her with his actions and his words that she is his number one priority, and that is not something you can change about a person. The bad boy type might be a lot of fun, but he is not worth it. The one who is worth it? The one who proves through his actions day in and day out that he is there and you are everything. So, Conrad and Jeremiah? We vote Jeremiah.
