Community Season 6 Episode 12 Review: “Wedding Videography”

Community

Okay. I’m convinced now that there is no topic Community must leave alone. They’ve done everything from campus wide “the floor is lava” games to Garrett getting married. I never thought any of this could be done. This is the show that (until I saw it) I never knew I wanted, and I’ve never regretted for a second making it to Season 6.

This week, on the penultimate episode of Community Season 6: Garrett proposes to his girlfriend, Stacy, while in Jeff’s class. Abed proceeds to make a documentary about the wedding. After getting told off by Garrett’s mom for being late and obnoxious, the gang decides to be the best wedding guests ever, but they uncover some unsettling secrets in the process.

Community never ceases to amaze me. I was laughing along, heartily amused at almost everything that happened (as per usual), when they dropped a bombshell on me: Garrett’s Aunt Polly and Stacy’s MeeMaw are the same person. I was a little shocked, and horrified, but mostly, I could not stop laughing. The mood of the show was kind of building and becoming increasingly positive, and then all of a sudden it just shocks you. Community is a lot of things, but if it were predictable, it wouldn’t be funny.

My favorite thing about this episode was not the “incest” topic, nor the documentary style film (though don’t get me wrong, both were hilarious). Rather, my favorite thing was how this absurd situation showcased real, relatable characters. There was a clear moment in which the gang’s obnoxious behavior was pointed out, and it changed them. It made them want to be better. They still operated, of course, in the ridiculous parameters in which the characters exist, but it showcased their flaws, their heart, and their individual desires. The episode operated around the “Garrett getting married” premise, but it was a really fascinating character piece about our gang.

Through all of this insanity, my favorite part about all of it was Chang saving the wedding. His journey, of course, has been the strangest of all the characters on this show. From Spanish teacher to super villain to Greendale student, Chang has done it all. Well, now really he has, since he convinced Garrett and Stacy to stay married. As gross as the whole thing was, Chang’s speech and plea to Garrett was weirdly heartwarming and sweet. I’m still not sure if I was crying from laughing or crying because of crying, but either way, the whole thing moved me.

Here are some of my favorite quotes/moments from the episode:

– “Go Garrett!”- Jeff

– Britta’s Garrett impression.

– I REALLY want to play “Celebrity Garrett marriage.”

– “I’m HOME ALOOONE!”- Chang

– “My name is Elroy Patashnik, and from 2006 to 2009, I was addicted to encouraging white people.”- Elroy

– “I’m not going to Winger speech it.”- Jeff, regarding the best man toast

– “What are you Hitler? Hitler!”- Britta

– “Britta, we’re ALL the worst right now. Take a day off.”- Dean Pelton

Dan Harmon and company deserve major kudos. Not just for proving that they can take ANY topic and make a funny episode about it, but for creating such a quality program. Rarely, in today’s content flooded market, do we find a show that can make you laugh, cry, throw up, and scratch your head all in the span of a half hour. Community has accomplished things no other sitcom can dream of, and it makes me so proud to be fan. Next week is the season (series?) finale, so let’s all keep praying for at least a movie. Hope points for everyone. Fat dog for midterms. #SixSeasonsAndAMovie
