Clint Eastwood to Direct, Produce, and Star In “The Mule”

Clint Eastwood is currently looking forward to the release of his new movie ‘The 15:17 to Paris’. He has produced and directed this biographical thriller drama film which is based on the true events of the 2015 Thalys train attack. The film is set for release on February 9, 2018. However, Eastwood is not resting on his laurels and already has his next project in the pipeline. It is rumored that the Hollywood legend has been circling Imperative Entertainment and Warner Bros. with a screenplay titled ‘The Mule’. According to multiple sources, Eastwood is intending to direct and produce the film as well as taking the leading role. The film is about Leo Sharp who is a 90-year-old drug courier.

In June 2014, Sam Dolnick wrote an article about Leo Sharp for The New York Times. By November of the same year, the article was acquired by Imperative Entertainment and it was planned that Ruben Fleischer would direct and produce the movie. The producers were then still looking for a writer for the screenplay.

World War II veteran Sharp was an award-winning horticulturist who was particularly well-known for his prized lilies. At the age of 90, Sharp was sentenced to prison after he was busted for drugs. He had been running the drugs for the Sinaloa Cartel of Mexico. At the time of his arrest by the DEA, he had been trafficking cocaine to the value of $3 million through Michigan using his old pickup truck as his mode of transport.

The initial draft of the script was written by Nick Schenk, who also wrote the script for Eastwood’s ‘Gran Torino’. However, a rewrite of the script has since taken place and this was completed by Holstein, who is also the writer of ‘Weeds’. It has not yet been officially confirmed whether Eastwood has signed up to the project. However, if he does, it is likely he will produce using his Malpaso banner. Producers from Imperative Entertainment who will work alongside Eastwood are likely to include Bradley Thomas and Dan Friedkin.

If the film goes ahead, ‘The Mule’ will be just one of a string of films that Eastwood has worked on with Warner Bros. In fact, this company has been Eastwood’s home for filmmaking for many years and Warner Bros. Are also involved in ‘The 15:17 to Paris’. Historically, Warner Bros. does not comment on projects that involve Clint Eastwood and this is once again the case as they have refused to discuss his involvement with ‘The Mule’. Similarly, Imperative Entertainment’s representative also refused to make a comment.

Despite his age, Eastwood is 87, the filmmaker has not shown any signs of slowing down in his career. Prior to making ‘The 15:17 to Paris’, he was working on the adaptation of a novel called ‘Impossible Odds’ by Jessica Buchanan. He put this project on hold to put all his focus and efforts into making ‘The 15:17 to Paris’. As he has potentially lined up ‘The Mule’ as his next project, it looks like the actor, director, and producer does not yet have plans to retire.
