Recently, there was a trailer released for what looked a lot like a new Crocodile Dundee movie. For those who haven’t seen it, it featured Chris Hemsworth holding up a “Dundee” sign out in the Australian wilderness before showing incredulousness at the character Brian Dundee, who is being played by Danny McBride. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Brian Dundee is supposed to be Mick Dundee’s son, with the joke being that he has been Americanized through and through. With that said, it is unclear whether the trailer is supposed to be a movie trailer, a tourism commercial, or both at the same time, with no clarification on the matter having been issued so far.
Is There Even a New Crocodile Dundee Movie?
First, there are a lot of people who think that the trailer heralds a new Crocodile Dundee movie that will be called Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home. This is perhaps unsurprising considering that the Crocodile Dundee creator Paul Hogan has stated that he has been thinking about how to introduce the franchise to a new generation for some time before following up by expressing his excitement at introducing the “new Crocodile Dundee,” which isn’t the sort of thing that one would say about a tourism commercial. Likewise, Hemsworth has commented about McBride being the right fit for the role, which once again, suggests something lengthier than a short appearance in a tourism commercial. Based on these comments, it is no wonder that people think that there will be a new Crocodile Dundee movie even though there is next to no confirmed information about it at the moment.
Due to that lack of information, there are also people who think that the trailer is nothing more than a tourism commercial meant to be broadcast during the Super Bowl. This would make sense because Crocodile Dundee was responsible for one of the most successful marketing campaigns that Tourism Australia has ever had. Furthermore, there are some signs suggesting that the trailer is a tourism commercial rather than a full-fledged movie, with one being that its director Steve Rogers’s previous work with award-winning commercials and the other being Hemsworth’s status as an ambassador for Tourism Australia. However, the single most notable problem is that no one seems to have noticed the filming for a new Crocodile Dundee movie, which is more than a little bit odd to say the least. Summed up, while there is no certain proof that the trailer is for a tourism commercial rather than a new Crocodile Dundee movie, it is clear why some people would think that way.
Simply put, there isn’t enough information to decide between one option or the other at this point in time, not least because the people behind the trailer haven’t revealed much concrete information so far. For that matter, it should be mentioned that there is no reason that the trailer can’t herald both at the same time in an attempt to capitalize on the nostalgia for the original Crocodile Dundee movies, seeing as how one option would not rule out the other.
