Just in time for the holiday, Chicago Med‘s third season premiere has given us another hour of television to be thankful for. The jam-packed premiere kept the story tight, compelling, and even more attached to the Med staff we already love. Instead of seeing the panic of the immediate aftermath of Dr. Charles’s shooting, the show jumps ahead three months. Turn away now if you do not want spoilers. Both [SPOILER] Dr. Charles and his shooter survived, Dr. Choi and April have started seeing each other, Robyn’s encephalitis has been responding well to treatment, and Manning took a sabbatical. Though time has passed, in many ways the staff feels stuck in their roles. The only way out is through truth.
Who would have thought that Choi and April would make such a good match? That is one relationship we did not see coming, but at the same time, makes total sense. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way. There are those who would twist the relationship into something ugly out of pettiness. Unless or until their romantic relationship starts to affect their professional judgment, the rest of the world needs to back off. Nevertheless, April gets the brunt of the judgment. For her sake, it’s best to be completely professional in the work environment. Finally, Dr. Halstead and Dr. Manning are done dancing around each other. These two are going ahead with a relationship. It’s about time!
Recall that the cardio wing got a new doctor at the end of Season 2. Dr. Becker is competition for Dr. Rhodes, and she’s only too happy to step in when he has to take care of Robyn. Robyn has been doing much better, but Connor has had to stay on his toes with the Charles family. He’s been jumping back-and-forth between Robyn’s rehab center and the hospital for months, trying to get father and daughter back on their feet. Once he gets Robyn home, he can’t be sure what actions are hers and what are side effects of her treatment. To have a colleague steal a surgery on top of all of that is just pushing his mental capacity a bit too far. I feel sorry for Dr. Latham in all this. He couldn’t have known that Becker was being “nice” just to snake Connor’s case from him. He catches on though, and gives Connor a better case.
By all accounts, Dr. Charles has gone back to life as usual. He even testifies in his shooter’s defense, making a case for temporary insanity. But why would Charles say something like that? He’s not shown any sign of being upset, just his usual professional self. Reese is practically seething at the thought of seeing her mentor’s shooter go free. She could sit back and let the situation play itself out, but her anger, as justified as it is, is too great. To be fair, Reese makes some good medical points. Her judgment may be clouded, but there is no doubt that Dr. Charles’s is as well. He missed the signs that this man was violent, and he’s been trying to make up for that mistake. Reese knows that Charles needs to take a step back, even when he claims he is fine. The only person Charles should be helping right now is his daughter.
Has Dr. Charles recovered at all emotionally? Or is he simply worried about splitting himself between his fears and his duties? What was your favorite moment from the third season premiere?
