Being apart of the One Chicago universe, Chicago Justice will see many opportunities to showcase direct conflicts between the State’s Attorney’s Office and members of other department. What happens when there is a clear conflict of interest on a case within the department? Nothing very good. Not only does Chicago Justice lose a friend in this episode, they nearly lose any and all credibility in trying the case because of Anna’s connection to the victim.
The State’s Attorney’s Office is rocked when Judge Kinsey is shot and killed in a drive-by. What disturbs Jefferies and Stone the most is that seconds before he died the judge was with Anna. The immediate assumption is that Anna and the judge were having an affair, which would severely compromise any case made. She was certainly on more familiar terms with the judge than she should have been. She knows too many personal details about his life. From his strained relationship with his foster daughter, to his inner turmoil over a wrong call on a rape case. These are things you would tell a wife or a mistress. Yet Anna claims she was not having an affair with him.
The judge was in fact killed because of a bad call he made on a rape conviction. Judge Kinsey sentenced a rapist to minimal jail time, after which the guy left the country. A couple of clues later points to the victim’s ex-husband John Hoffman. He became obsessed with his ex-wife Zoe’s safety when she told him about her rape, despite the fact it happened prior to them being married. From then on he became obsessed with his wife’s rape, so much so that he made her feel like a victim again. Dr. Charles explains that random emotional moments could trigger suppressed acts of violence. Sure enough, Anna’s personal time with Kinsey comes back to haunt them, so Stone has to double down on a motive a clear confession from Hoffman. As it turns out, Zoe moved on. When she announced her engagement, her ex-husband lost his mind and killed the judge he blamed for everything. We never find out Anna’s real relationship with Kinsey, though she denies an affair.
Any thoughts on what the relationship between Anna and the judge might have been? I would say it was no one’s business, but someone did die over long buried secrets.
