Chicago Fire Season 3 Episode 16 Review: “Red Rag the Bull”

Chicago Fire

Is this a firehouse or high school? I’m really not sure anymore, because the stakes are higher, but it seems as if the games are still the same on Chicago Fire.

The school bully, and make no mistake, I’m using my nice words for this description, is definitely Interim Chief Pridgen. Thanks to a drunken admission from Beth, he officially knows Casey was sleeping with his ex-wife. We knew he’d find some childish way to punish Casey for it, but this time he used a life and death mistake to do it. Pridgen makes a horrible mistake and accidentally lets the building manager at a fire back in during the blaze, and the manager ends up in critical condition. When the firehouse comes under investigation, Pridgen lies and throws the blame onto Casey. The only other person who can verify that Casey made a mistake is Welch, and we all know how eager he is to help Casey. So Severide steps up to help his best friend by going over Pridgen’s head to the Chief above him.

Pridgen works overtime to cover his behind on this mistake, thereby forcing Welch to make a decision on whether or not to back Casey or Pridgen. You can tell that Welch is genuinely torn, but he makes a decision after Casey saves his life on a call. Choosing to side with the house that has treated him with respect despite his mistakes, Welch chooses Casey and is immediately booted from the house. Welch definitely earned some respect for this move, and I wouldn’t mind seeing him back at Firehouse 51.

Brett pulls out her best inner cheerleader for Dawson this week by setting up a double date for them, Cruz, and an acquaintance from Chicago Med. Cruz is actually more freaked out by this idea than Dawson, as he feels loyal to Casey. After getting somewhat of a blessing from Casey though, Cruz agrees to the double date. It turns out though that there was nothing to worry about, as Dawson’s poor date really had nothing in common with the adrenaline junkies he was having dinner with.

Maybe this is high school, since Mouch just found out that his one-time sperm donation did in fact result in a child, and that child may be able to find him now after the clinic suffered a security breach. Sure enough, a grown son later calls Mouch to ask to meet. Luckily, Mouch has the best girlfriend ever to guide him through this rough period. Platt shows up at the firehouse and encourages Mouch to at least give the meeting a chance. Upon actually seeing his son though, Mouch can’t go through with it, and Platt is the only one who notices that things didn’t go well.

Boden and Donna end up playing a very childish game themselves, and put Herman in the middle. Both of them want Boden to go back to work, but Boden doesn’t want to break Donna’s heart, and Donna is anxious to get Boden out of the house. Upon learning of all of the drama going on at the firehouse with Pridgen, the pressure is even more on for Boden to return to work. So both Boden and Donna ask Herman for advice on how to break the news to the other, and Herman probably makes the best decision to simply keep his mouth shut. So Pridgen is unceremoniously thrown out, while Boden is back in.

Now would you like to see Welch back after the great leap forward he took this week? Will Mouch ever see his son again?
