Can Lifetime’s Beaches Do the Movie Beaches Any Justice?

Did you ever know that you’re my hero?  It’s something you’re going to be hearing Idina Menzel belt out on Lifetime tonight at 8pm.  In what seems to be a fairly big surprise to a lot of Beaches fans, Lifetime is doing a reboot of the classic movie Beaches that starred Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey.  Only this Beaches is starring Idina Menzel and Nia Long.  From what I can gather there’s a collective “sigh” from about 50% of people and another collective “this should be interesting” from the others.

We all know how amazing Idina Menzel’s voice is and Nia Long’s got a ton of experience in a myriad of roles.  It’s just a really tough call going after a movie that was so important to so many people and completely redoing it.

The reality is that Idina Menzel is going to nail “Wind Beneath My wings” which should immediately entrance some people. Menzel stars as CC opposite Nia Long who plays Hillary in the weepy drama, which follows two best friends who stay close throughout their entire lives. (The roles were played by Midler and Barbara Hershey, respectively, in the original.).

And by the way just in case you want to know, Midler gave the project her blessing. Obviously someone had to give this movie a go but having the approval of Midler certainly can’t hurt. The preview above shares a ton of emotion, crying, and everything the original movie contained. While it’s sure to be a tearjerker, can fans detach from trying to compare it to the original? Only time will tell but get out the tissues because Menzel’s gonna bring it.
