Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 2 Episode 21 Review: “Det. Dave Majors”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the most consistently funny shows on television right now, with each episode delivering plenty of laughs amidst great character moments. In fact, it’s currently one of two half hour comedies on network television that I tune in to every week (the other is New Girl). While the quality of network comedies has been dropping over recent years, this show has been a light in the darkness, featuring an amazing ensemble cast in which in any given week, any character could be the star.

What makes this show work so well is that while it may be a workplace comedy at its core, all of the characters have formed real friendships and genuinely care about each other. That was evident in last night’s episode as Charles, Gina, and Holt, in their own ways, attempted to convince Terry to stay at the precinct. After being offered a position with better hours, better pay, and his own office, Terry was seriously considering leaving the Nine-Nine. Trying to tempt Terry remain at the precinct, Charles and Gina were extra nice to him, listening to him talk about his daughters and doing his work for him so that he could get home in time for date night with his wife.

While Charles and Gina took one path to convince Terry to stay , Holt took a less obvious path, making it seem like he was actually pushing Terry out by giving him extra work and keeping him from his wife. In the end, though, it was this technique that made Terry stay, as the work Holt gave him made him realize how much good he has done for the community by working at the precinct. No matter how they went about doing it, the main goal for everyone was to get Terry to stay. If they were simply coworkers, they would have let him go without a second thought, but because of the bonds that these people have formed, they’re willing to do anything to keep the group together.

Another thing Brooklyn Nine-Nine does well is romance, something that many other shows fail to realistically depict. The main pairing of the show, Jake and Amy, have their ups and downs, but no matter what, it’s their friendship that is most important to them. Both character at some point in the series have admitted to liking each other but have never acted on it, partly out of fear that it would ruin that friendship if things went south and also because the timing has never been right. The closer we get to the season finale, though, the more it seems like something real might develop between these two.

In last night’s episode, Jake and Amy worked a case with Dave Majors, played by the always hilarious Garret Dillahunt. Majors is an incredibly successful detective, and both Jake and Amy are huge fans of his and are thrilled to work with him. When Dave asks Jake if he and Amy have something going on, checking to make sure before asking her out, Jake says no. After a talk with Rosa, however, Jake realizes that this might be his last chance to ask Amy out before Dave does. In the end, he can’t work up the courage to do it and Dave takes her out, but surprisingly, she isn’t interested. Dave is essentially perfect for Amy, but she turns him down. Obviously, she still has feelings for Jake, even if it is subconscious. However, she tells Jake that the reason she turned down Dave is that she no longer wants to date cops. This will be yet another hurdle that these two will have to overcome, but I’m confident that they will by the time the season’s done. After all, you can only keep two characters who both have feelings for each other apart for so long before it becomes unrealistic.
