Breaking Down the First Trailer for Spielberg’s “The Post”

20 Century Fox has revealed the trailer for The Post, a film that highlights a controversy at Pentagon Papers. It stars Tom Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner as well as Meryl Streep who has won multiple Oscars.  And by the way, the cast extends way beyond these two powerhouses.  Although there has been a buzz due to the budget proposed by Steven Spielberg, it was confirmed The Post will proceed to air on December 22 and its trailer has revealed a lot of details that can point to the path the film will take. If you are yet to get a clear message of what is about to come, here is a breakdown of the trailer to help you prepare for its arrival.

Trailer

Newspaper drama

The film features a newspaper drama that shows chronicles of the Washington Post of 1971 where the media house wants to publish Pentagon Papers highlighting its objection of the government of the United States. The trailer shows Katherine Graham (Streep) who works for The Washington Post with help from Ben Bradlee (Hanks) as they are in a hurry to ensure the Pentagon Papers report is published to expose the rampant cover-up that has marred the government. The state is said to have been involved in the affairs of Vietnam and this has been happening for three decades with four presidents implicated.

The two decide it is now time to bring to an end the days where the truth would be hidden from the public and they are so motivated to ensure the information is published. Therefore, they have to make a choice whether to put their careers at risk or just ignore the facts contained in the report. Hanks says that they could be sent to prison, but he is concerned about what would happen if they failed to publish the information. He is of the opinion that the country will lose a big opportunity to kick out those who have been destroying its democratic space if the report is not published to expose the individuals mentioned.

Pentagon Papers are documents that contain the controversial expose that paints a bleak picture of the military of the U.S. for meddling in the affairs of Vietnam. But the Nixon administration succeeds in filing an injunction that helps to stop the paper from getting published, so the Post is grappling with the idea of publishing it by picking from the place Times had left off. Such a move could jeopardize the future of the media house.

Finally published

The Washington Post continues with its plan to publish the Pentagon Papers and contrary to the expectations of many, the firm also survives an attack from the government that seeks to bring the media outlet down. It would also few years later reveal a story about Watergate and all these are accomplished under the leadership of Ben Bradlee, the executive editor, and Graham. This probably is no coincidence and Spielberg might have decided to revisit the conflict heightened between the press and the government that seeks to bar journalism from exposing the truth.
