Breakfast Club 30th Anniversary DVD Gets Deleted Scenes and More

Fans of the 1985 coming-of-age comedy-drama ‘The Breakfast Club’ will now have the chance to see previously deleted scenes. Criterion Collection is re-releasing this film on Blu-ray and DVD and the bonus material includes 50 minutes of formerly unreleased material.

‘The Breakfast Club’ was a big hit in the 1980s.Its five main stars earned the nickname of ‘The Brat Pack’ and it was this film that shot many of them to fame. Judd Nelson played delinquent John Bender, Molly Ringwald took on the role of pampered teen Claire Standish, Emilio Estevez was state champion wrestler Andrew Clark, Anthony Michael Hall plays geeky Brian Johnson, and Ally Sheedy played shy outcast Allison Reynolds. The film also starred Paul Gleason, John Kapelos, and Ron Dean.

The movie is about a group of teens who have nothing in common and have to spend a day together when they are given a full-day detention. They soon reveal their most personal secrets. This low-budget movie was made with just $1 million but grossed $51.5 million at the box office. The movie was written and directed by John Hughes.

There are some fantastic scenes to watch on the re-release and one of the best shows just how weird Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy’s characters really were. The two characters are talking in the girls’ bathroom. Allison is washing her hands when Claire comments that she doesn’t know why she is washing her hands before eating if she is going to stand and eat next to the toilet, anyway. Allison’s reaction to this is to eat a potato chip directly from the sink.

The deleted scenes are not the only bonus material available as there is also an interesting video essay which features writer and director John Hughes’ production notes for the film. These are read by Judd Nelson who starred in the film. There are also new interviews with Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy.

Both actresses have gone on to have very successful careers in the film industry following their performances in ‘The Breakfast Club’. Ringwald has starred in films including ‘Pretty in Pink’, ‘Betsy’s Wedding’, ‘Malicious’, ‘Cowboy Up’, and ‘Not Another Teen Movie’. Her most recent movie was the 2017 film ‘SPF-18′ and she is playing Gabby Hill in ‘Siberia’ which is set for release in 2018.

Likewise, Sheedy has enjoyed a prolific career in the film industry. Some of her best-known films include ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’, ‘WarGames’, ‘Short Circuit’, ‘High Art’, ‘Day Zero’, and ‘Welcome to the Rileys’. Her most recent films were in 2016 when she played Joani Lunsford in ‘Little Sister’ and had a cameo role in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’.

If you were a fan of the film and you are wondering when you will have the opportunity to see the deleted scenes, then you will be pleased to learn that both the Blue-ray and DVD will be on sale from January 2, 2018. Once you have seen these scenes, you will have your own opinions on whether they should have remained in the movie or if the director made the right decision to cut the scenes.
