Who loves holiday-themed episodes? Me! Bob’s Burgers really pulls off these episodes really well. The Halloween episodes are some of my favorite in the series, but this time Bob’s Burgers is tackling another holiday: Valentine’s Day, which can be a rough day for some people, and this episode of Bob’s Burgers might make you laugh if you’re a little bit miserable.
Tina, the lover of butts and all things friend-fiction, concocts a plan with Darrel (voiced by Aziz Ansari) to win Cupid’s Couple at the Valentine’s dance. Darrel wants to date Rosa, who is a year older than him, and he needs to pretend to date Tina, win Cupid’s Couple with her, and then break up so Rosa will date him. A little ridiculous, right?
Tina warns Darrel that he will probably fall in love with her (I think we all saw where this was going), and the charades commence. They win and Tina is totally in love with Darrel, but Tina learns an important lesson in this episode. In her rage at the bowling alley, she reveals their Cupid’s Couple secret to everyone and Rosa leaves Darrel. She understands that the Darrel she falls in love with is just a manifestation of her ideal guy and not who Darrel actually is as a person. Tina looks for Rosa and makes a few bad jokes in order to convince her to get back together with Darrel. This exchange had some great lines, and Aziz Ansari was great as always.
Meanwhile, Linda and Bob try to combat their awkward Valentine’s day from the past and embark on a “Valentine’s Day Advent Calendar.” Bob is totally up for it, what a good sport, but Linda makes it a little weird. It starts with a gross strawberry in her apron, a way too bubbly bath, and a strip tease. Go, Bob! What a trooper. I love Linda and Bob so much because they’re so weird and in love. Bob’s voice was pretty close to the drunken Bob we saw in this season’s Thanksgiving episode, and it was pretty great. He even has an audience from across the street at Jimmy Pesto’s, and he keeps strip teasing. The whole thing was embarrassing and hilarious.
This episode really reminded me what I love about Bob’s Burgers. It can present all different kinds of love in both appropriate and inappropriate ways and still make you laugh. I loved getting to see Jimmy Jr. ask Tina out, and I love when Tina’s classmates are involved in an episode. This episode rang true for middle school dances, and I think it’s definitely worth a watch.
Some of the great lines:
– “I’ve only dated 2 ½ boys but I’ve thought about relationships a lot” — Tina
– “It’s cute how they’re glasses reflect off each other.” (about Darrel and Tina)
– “It’s the romance of the century!” — Gene
– “Look at their slow dance, they’re so slow! How can we compete with that?” — Darrel about their competitors
– “Magic Mike me, baby.” — Linda to Bob
– “Lane five don’t do that.” — The announcer to Louise
– “Those cheeks aren’t leaving me weak like they usually do.” — Tina about Jimmy Jr’s butt.
– “Dammit there are no leagues!” “League bowling will begin in lane two.”
– “They’re like Mario and Luigi. They’re so in love.” — Jocelyn about Darrel and Rosa
