It’s difficult to imagine that it’s been almost twenty years since the first season of Big Brother came on TV. The idea was radical at the time. It was when reality television was just in its infancy. The premise was unimaginable. Strangers got to live together in a custom-built house with little to no privacy–all under constant and unavoidable surveillance. The best part about the show was the fact that we got the chance to witness it all, at least after all the editing and such. With the recent release of the 21st season of the reality TV show, fans are excited as ever to see what the showrunners have planned this time around.
According to this article from ETonline.com, the show started off with the introduction of new twists. Big Brother is particularly infamous for such moves, and it wouldn’t have lasted as long without them. The premiere showed us long-time host Julie Chen Moonves being awesome as always. It may be season 21 already, but the lady hasn’t aged much at all. Early on in the show, Chen Moonves announced that the very first task the houseguests had to do was choose who their Camp Director would be. This is a first for Big Brother; there’s never been one ever before. While it may sound like a great thing to be chosen for, being Camp Director for Big Brother does come with a downside. Of course, it has advantages as well. It’s a balancing act much like the rest of the show is.
23-year old Los Angeles bartender and server Jackson Michie won the vote for Camp Director, which means that he can’t be eliminated this first week. Also as Camp Director, Jackson was allowed to “banish” four houseguests, as this article from Cinemablend.com stated. Out of those four banished houseguests, three would be able to return only after a competition. The last one would be gone for good. This twist was definitely shocking to the houseguests themselves, as they realized they might be going home before the game even gets going. Of course in true Big Brother fashion, the situation also puts a big red target on Jackson’s back. Not surprisingly, Jackson chose to banish all the other big contenders for the position of Camp Director: fan favorite Jessica Milagros, Cliff Hogg III, David Alexander, and one unknown name.
These houseguests were actually eager to become Camp Director and actually campaigned for the position. Jessica was even shocked to hear that it wasn’t her, when she was clearly the one favored for the position coming into the premiere. It’s just another reminder that nothing is as it seems when you’re under the Big Brother roof. While Jessica has been banished along with the others, she might be safe for now. There are rumors circulating that banished houseguest David might be the one going home first. Goldderby.com writes that some fans believe David was photoshopped onto the CBS promo photos for the show. This isn’t the first time something like this happened on the show, and fans are definitely convinced–but not too happy about it all. Nothing to worry about there, however; Even if he goes home, there’s still a chance that we’ll see David again in the future.
While fans are already lining up their favorites, some common names are starting to appear. As mentioned earlier, Jessica seems to be a clear favorite among the females as well as Christie Murphy. Christie is looking to be the second Head of House (along with Jackson being Camp Director), again, from pure speculation and possible leaks. While we’ve learned in the past that leaks on Big Brother could be fake, this one shouldn’t be dismissed so quickly. Christie claims that Jackson actually made a pact with the group of houseguests he banished, so she’s keeping it cool until she knows where her place is among the rest of the houseguests. It may be a good move for Head of House, but Christie might have another weapon up her sleeve.
According to this article from Cheatsheet.com, there have been rumors that some of the houseguests already know each other. That’s another twist for everyone, both fans and houseguests alike. In fact, there are two contestants rumored to know each other, and host Chen Moonves actually confirmed this already. This might be Christie’s other upper hand: she already knows Tommy Bracco.
Some of you might be familiar with the name and/or the face. Houseguest Tommy is actually a Broadway dancer. He’s worked in a few hit Broadway shows including A Chorus Line and Pretty Woman: The Musical. The talented houseguest has a different strategy than most people who come into the Big Brother house. He decided that he would be nice and loving to everyone. No one wants to vote out the nice person, right? Wrong. Normal rules don’t quite apply, and Tommy might learn that lesson soon enough. However, the fact that he already knows Head of House Christie might come to his advantage. It might save him at some point or another. Otherwise, it might hurt him as well. There could only be one winner, after all.
Apart from the names we’ve already listed, we saw many other interesting characters on this season of Big Brother. We’ve got a Jason Momoa look alike, a college soccer star/professional tanner, a preschool aide, and a truck driver among others. The 16 contestants this season seem to be like the perfect mix of houseguests, and we can’t wait to see what Big Brother 21 has in store for each and all of them. With the show already starting off with all the twists, we can only imagine how much fun we’re all going to have watching the houseguests go down one by one.
