The Best Uses of Silence in the History of Movies

Of all of the most important elements to a movie, dialogue is super high on the list.  Next to directing and acting, the writing of a film has to be considered a top five if you were to rank what makes a great movie a great movie.   But it’s not just the writing that’s important.  It’s the way those lines are uttered.  It’s the context they’re in.  It’s in the accompanying scenery and sounds.   It’s in the special effects.  It’s in all these elements working in harmony that can make one scene more dominant and gripping than another.

In particular, I’d like to bring up sound.  As important as a musical score is, or the sound of a phone ringing in a scary movie is, sometimes the complete opposite of sound is equally as important.  A great moment of silence in a movie can be just as impactful as a moment filled with all kinds of noise.

But which movies pulled off silence better than others?  I’m glad you asked because the video below examines ten silent moments on film that could be considered to be the best silent moments of all-time.  Cinefix counts down some of their favorite uses of silence in cinematic history. Do you agree with their picks?
