Ranking The 10 Best Summer Anthems of the Past Decade

First of all much respect to Emerald Catron of Best Life for these songs of the summer since the ten below are representative of the past decade of summer anthems that have been seen as the most popular throughout the years. It’s hard to pin down just one song per summer that seemed to sum the season up in a nutshell, and as you might guess 2018’s song is still undecided, but you can take a look at those tracks that are up for the bid by taking a glance at Maeve McDermott’s article at USA Today and make your own decision. Some of them might seem like obvious choices but to those that make the decision it’s obviously something they don’t want to rush since it would appear that it takes some time to really narrow one down so as to peg it with the honor of being the anthem of the summer. To be honest the past couple of years have been so tumultuous in this country that picking a favorite song doesn’t always seem like the most important order of the day. But then again with a season that needs to be laid back and more open to fun than any other it would seem that it might be kind of pertinent to just pick one and have done with it.

Here are the songs that have defined the summers over the past decade.

10. 2008-I Kissed A Girl

When Katy Perry made her big splash in the music scene it came with a video that a lot of people were singing in their cars on the way to work and some were even feeling a bit naughty about since the subject material is kind of racy but still a lot of fun. In truth there was nothing wrong with the song, it was just like getting soaked with a glass of cold water without expecting it.

9. 2009-I Gotta Feeling

The Black Eyed Peas were still pretty popular a while back and they were still able to command a very big audience. That’s not saying that they can’t today, but things have changed and they’re not exactly the same band they used to be just a decade ago.

8. 2010-California Girls

Katy Perry took her fame and ran with it as you can see but it was a good part of Snoop Dogg’s presence that helped this song along since he did feature into it pretty heavily. That being said though she’s still been a star that kind of took off running and didn’t slow down for a good long while.

7. 2011-Party Rock Anthem

I’d like to say that LMFAO took us by surprise but that doesn’t sound quite right. Instead it seems as though they took us when they only had half of our attention and made us do an about face quickly and without much warning. Of course we didn’t argue since a lot of us got into their music pretty quickly.

6. 2012-Call Me Maybe

This was one of those songs that, when it was still new and being played all the time, you eventually got tired of because women, or even men, would use it when simply talking about this or that and sing their words in a very horrible imitation of the song. Yeah, it was better when this song finally dropped a bit.

5. 2013-Blurred Lines

Think back now to this clip that HollywoodLife presents and remind yourselves that Robin Thicke’s song was actually inviting a lot of speculation and dissent with the images he used in the first place, but Miley’s presence during a live performance at the VMA’s was just, well, yikes.

4. 2014-Fancy

Anytime someone dressed up as Cher from Clueless and can rock the look you know that people are going to lose their minds and think it’s the greatest thing ever. For this particular summer at least Iggy Azalea had it nailed and she had the top spot when it came to producing a song that was best for the season.

3. 2015-Bad Blood

Taylor Swift’s reputation has kind of gone up and down throughout the years based on the things she’s said and the feuds that she’s apparently entered into with other stars. But one thing that’s continued is the fact that she is still a pop star without question and she can lay down tracks that many people just can’t touch.

2. 2016-One Dance

Some people are actually getting kind of tired of Drake since he’s been so insanely popular and successful for a while now. But apart from those that just don’t like him because they want him to go away, he’s stayed pretty close to the top if he hasn’t been there the whole time.

1. 2017-Bodak Yellow

Cardi B has got to be one of the most polarizing artists around since half the people you talk to might vilify her for any number of reasons and the other half might sing her praises to the sky. If you’re smart and don’t know enough about her you’ll just nod and agree and go on your merry way.

As of now it would seem that 2018’s song still hasn’t been picked.
