When Ashton made the decision to change his life he was employed for a company in Cape Town, South Africa. This is where he found a yacht training program and he didn’t waste any time signing up. He successfully completed the course and then he was off in search of a job. He didn’t have many options for work in his home country so he left South Africa and traveled to the Southern part of France on a job-hunting adventure.

3. His first yachting job was in the Arctic

Pienaar is from a warmer climate so his first yachting job represented a big change or him. He found work on his trip to France and it was on a private yacht. The vessel was bound for an Arctic expedition. This took him to a very different part of the world but he was up for the experience. His new career would take him to many new and exciting locations, but his first experience as a professional yachtie was as a deckhand on a private yacht in the Arctic.

4. He wasn’t content with being a deckhand

Ashton started out as many in this industry do, as a deckhand learning the basics of yachting. As time went by he was no longer satisfied with remaining at this lower station. In this business, a great deal of training and certifications are required. Each job in the commercial yachting business bears its own heavy burden of responsibility. Others are placing their lives in your hands because it takes a team of competent and knowledgeable professionals to run a yacht and to do it the right way. Ashton continued forward with his training and education and he secured his Master of Yachts 200 GT license. This gave him the option of working as a mate, which is higher in level than a deckhand. In 2019 he joined up with a crew out of Croatia and is now the First Mate and Co-Captain of a Florida based yacht.

5. He is introspective

Ashton Pienaar takes nothing for granted after a near-death experience that he had. He is a fortunate man and he knows this, but he also craves adventure. He’s not afraid to venture into the unknown and he’s learned something new about himself with each new adventure that he embarks upon.

Ashton has a lot of weighty responsibility on his shoulders in his chosen profession. Still, he maintains a great sense of humor. This is absolutely necessary for anyone who deals with the public regularly. He’s not afraid to do something silly for the sake of a laugh every now and then. He even tried a new FaceApp that the crew was playing around with. It was an age advancing app and he found out what he would look like several years down the road. The app was originally intended to allow people to compare themselves with elder family members to see if they would look like them as they age. He compared his with Captain Lee Rosbach, but the resemblance wasn’t that close. This just shows that he has a light side.

7. He’s appeared on two television series

Ashton Pienaar has gained celebrity status from his appearances on two different television series. He is best known for his appearance as a deckhand on “Below Deck” appearing in 5 episodes of the show as himself in 2019. Prior to that, he was also on the television series “Watch What Happens: Live.” He appeared in 2018 with Jenny McCarthy in an episode.

8. Ashton helps make sure guests are safe

There was an incident onboard the yacht that brought a lot of attention to the show. A guest named Brandy appeared to be very drunk. During a picnic at an off-ship excursion, the guest seemed to be “completely out of it” according to Ashton. He was one of the crewmembers assigned to ensuring that guests are taken care of and in safe hands. Although they were not sure exactly what was wrong with her, she was definitely out of it. It seemed like she was either on drugs or drunk, but this was never determined. He takes his job and responsibilities seriously and kept an eye on Brandy, making sure that she was never in any danger or in need of medical attention. He and the rest of the crew had to spend a lot of their time keeping their eye on her to make sure that she didn’t get hurt on deck, but this is also a part of his job
