Stephen Amell has teased that Arrow Season 5 will return the series to its roots. Gone are the magical elements of the third and fourth seasons, which dealt with Ra’s al Ghul and Damien Darhk, allowing the CW superhero drama to go back to what it has always done best: top-notch action. And from all the promotional material we’ve seen from Arrow Season 5, it does truly seem that the show will be going back to the days of old, although the latest Season 5 trailer also suggests that there will still be a lot of new in the fifth season as well.
Where does this “new” come from? As we’ve seen in past promos, it’s all about the brand new Team Arrow that Oliver is assembling, following Laurel’s death and the absence of both Diggle and Thea. While his former teammates may have been on or near the same level as him when it came to fighting and tactical abilities, these new recruits need a little bit of work, which will force Oliver into another new role (aside from that of Star City’s mayor): teacher.
Will Oliver be able to effectively train Curtis, Evelyn Sharp, and the rest of the up-and-coming vigilantes? We’ll have to wait till the Season 5 premiere to see, but in the trailer below, he appears to be doing a decent, if not great, job at coaching the new squad. Hopefully, he can keep on doing that until they’re all ready to join him out in the Star City streets.
Arrow Season 5 kicks off on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 8 p.m. on The CW. Check out the new trailer and The CW’s official description of the fifth season premiere, “Legacy,” below:
NEW BEGINNINGS – After Laurel’s (Katie Cassidy) death and the departures of both Diggle (David Ramsey) and Thea (Willa Holland) from Team Arrow, Oliver (Stephen Amell) takes to the streets solo to protect Star City’s citizens as the Green Arrow. With Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) guiding him from the bunker, Oliver is forced to deal with a city that has become overrun with both criminals and a slew of new (and painfully inexperienced) vigilantes. Watching Oliver try to balance his jobs as both the mayor and also the protector of Star City, Felicity suggests he form a new team, but Oliver resists. However, when a deadly new criminal, Tobias Church (guest star Chad L. Coleman), enters the picture, Oliver realizes the best thing for the city might be a new team of superheroes. Meanwhile, the flashbacks take us to Russia where Oliver faces off against the Bratva. James Bamford directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti and teleplay by Marc Guggenheim & Wendy Mericle (#501). Original airdate 10/5/2016.
