Appreciating the Voice Acting Work of Vic Mignogna (Outside the Allegations)

If you’re not into anime you might not know much of anything about Vic Mignogna, but the man has been kind of impressive throughout his career since he’s done a great deal of voice work and has other talents as well that have seen him ascend in the business and create a reputation that has preceded him wherever he goes. The average voice actor tends to escape the notice of a lot of people that aren’t die hard fans and wouldn’t be able to tell one person from another, but for those that know who’s voicing their favorite characters Vic is one of those that seems to deserve a round of applause and a great deal of respect wherever he goes. Voice acting is definitely something that a lot of people take for granted and don’t give much thought to, but it’s still the kind of craft that requires skill and the right person for the job since not just any old voice will do when it comes to various characters.

There are still people out there that might claim that one voice sounds like another if you listen closely enough to voice actors that do multiple characters, and that’s true for the most part. There are in fact a lot of characters that sound alike due to being voiced by the same person, but it’s the context in which they’re used that allows the listener to differentiate them since inflection, tone, pitch, and many other things can be altered and changed just enough to give rise to a new character. The voice actor will almost always be recognized by one or two qualities within their voice however that will point them out for those that know what they sound like. It’s not a huge secret that many people can’t change their voice to such an extent that it can’t be recognized, but the idea that anyone can create so many different personas and keep them all straight in their head is something impressive to be certain. Vic has a wide range of characters that he’s voiced since he started in the business and it’s simply mind-boggling to guess just how he keeps them all straight in his head. Again it’s easy to think that a lot of these characters sound alike in one way or another, but to keep their personalities and their own little quirks straight in his head is kind of impressive since when filming he has to make sure that he doesn’t mix one character with another.

Voice actors do have an advantage in that they aren’t in front of the camera and don’t have that added pressure when it comes to remembering lines and what scene they’re in since quite honestly they’re standing there with script in hand more often than not. But it would seem that they still have to worry about the same kinds of things that regular on-screen actors go through and are just as prone to making mistakes or being pegged for actions they did or didn’t do. To better explain it sounds as though he’s been accused of inappropriate touching of fans and even a couple of fellow voice actors in the past and has been said to be just kind of creepy when he’s at conventions. This of course has disrupted his work and his reputation throughout the past several years as people have come forward to denounce him for these kind of acts, which he’s denied at times despite the number of people that have come forward.

One would have thought that such things had all been shaken out of the tree, but obviously there are still reports of misconduct coming in from every angle still since this isn’t the only time an actor from any walk of entertainment has been accused of harassment in recent years. It’s a bit sad to think that such things are still being rooted out whether they’re real or false allegations since it keeps the idea that a lot of actors, voice or live, are creeps that need to be outed and reminded that their status does not give them special rights. Whether he’s guilty of the charges or not doesn’t fully diminish the work he’s done in the past since he has been an impressive voice actor, but it does certainly put a damper on the idea that he’s the kind of voice actor that’s beyond reproach.

It’s kind of difficult to equate just what goes through the mind of an individual once they reach a certain elevated status thanks to their work, but it’s just as hard to equate what some folks believe is inappropriate touching and what’s intentional versus what’s accidental. It’s true that there are a lot of ways that someone can cross the line when it comes to touching others, but it’s equally true that some folks seem to think that a friendly touch is something far more sinister.
