American Pie Singer Don McLean’s Wife gets Protective Order

Just about everyone in the entire world knows the song “American Pie” by Don McLean.  It’s actually considered somewhat of an American anthem despite the fact that most people don’t realize that the song is about the tragic plane crash involving Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper.  Even so, “American Pie” is played in stadiums all around the country as a rallying cry.  It’s been using in commercials, political rallies, and just about anywhere when a group is trying to support patriotism.    But the man behind the song, Don McLean, has not had such a patriotic life as of late.

McLean pleaded guilty in July to domestic violence assault. His lawyer said at the time that his punishment would be a $3,000 (Dh11,018) fine if he stayed out of trouble for a year. Court officials say the court granted a final order of protection on Wednesday that will last for two years. It was preceded by a temporary order.  Patrisha McLean says she is glad the order was granted. Don McLean’s attorney did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

We don’t know the real reason that domestic violence occurred but I do have a theory.  “American Pie” is 45 years old.   It’s safe to say that this is really the only famous song of Don McLean’s career.  How many times do you think he’s played it live?  10,000?  20,000?  I mean it’s one thing to be Billy Joel and have to play your 70s and 80s stuff over and over again but one song?  ONE song?  I’d have to think that Don McLean has gone completely insane from playing that song so much and is taking out his anger on his wife.
