Agent Carter Season 1 Episode 3 Review: “Time and Tide”

Agent Carter 1.03

Marvel’s latest new TV show, Agent Carter, is continuing the greatness it started with its strong two-hour series premiere, as, this week, we got to go deeper into the male characters of S.S.R. and discover that Edwin Jarvis has been hiding a secret of his own.

Last week’s Agent Carter premiere was action-packed and filled with twists and turns; however, this week, I enjoyed that it was these small yet sweet character moments for pretty much the whole main cast. But before that: how cool is that Peggy gets to do her own introduction at the start of each episode? Now, it’s not only just the DC TV shows that do that, and let’s be honest: the more Hayley Atwell we get, the better. We get to see Peggy’s new home at the Griffith Hotel where things are somewhat tense with strict rules by its landlady Miriam Fry, who I feel I have heard somewhere before in the Marvel comics.

The relationship between Angie and Peggy is something that is a key aspect to this episode, and you see how Angie is really trying to get closer with her. Is it just me or does anyone continue to get that bad feeling that Angie might be an undercover agent of something evil? I wouldn’t be surprised if Angie is Agent Carter’s Grant Ward and reveals that she is on the bad side. However, we also get to meet a new character, Dottie Underwood (played by the fantastic Bridget Regan), who moves to the hotel as well very quickly after Fry evicts another girl for breaking the rules. As sweet as Dottie is, maybe she is someone we also need to keep a close eye on.

My respect and love for Jarvis continued to grow in this episode, as we learned more about him and his secrets. When he was being interrogated by Thompson, who only makes it easier to hate him, we discovered how he protected and helped his Jewish wife by having to break a few laws. This makes me connect with Jarvis more–he’s more than just a butler. Although, it seems that this isn’t the last time we will see Jarvis have a secret or two, and next time, it might be something that can really tick Peggy off.

As we all know, aside from Sousa and Jarvis, pretty much every other male character is either a man pig or a villain that is also a man pig. However in this episode, there is the death of a S.S.R. member, Ray Krzeminksi, and while you may feel hatred towards that character, the reactions from S.S.R. was heartbreaking. Seeing everything from Peggy’s POV, watching all the women crying, while the men were mourning, gave me the sense that there is some humanity in those agents. Dooley’s speech to all of them made me feel that this organization, as disgusting as they can be to women, do look at each other as a family.

So while it wasn’t as action-packed like next week, getting those small and good character moments was just as good. Plus, shows need to balance out several elements, and you always need more than just action. Overall, this episode was another good episode, and while we only have a few episodes left of the season, there is still so much to look forward to in this amazing new Marvel drama.

Marvel’s Agent Carter will be back with new episodes on Tuesday, January 27, 9/8c on ABC, featuring a special cameo by Marvel Legend, Stan Lee!
