George Lucas’ advice to Jon Favreau when it came to following old stories wasn’t missed at all it looks like since the long-snouted aliens known as Kubaz have been a part of Star Wars lore for a while. For those that haven’t watched the movies (insane but it happens) or those that don’t remember, it was a Kubaz in A New Hope that pointed the way to the Millennium Falcon when Luke, Obi-Wan, and the droids hitched a ride with Han Solo and Chewbacca. The Mandalorian brought in at least one or two more Kubaz, it’s hard to know if the alien that hails Mando a cab is the same one trying to assassinate Baby Yoda, but it is interesting to see how they act as spies and killers, otherwise harbingers of death as the video states. It feels like a bit of a stretch, but there could be something there all the same.
The idea that Kuiil the Ugnaught could be one of those that was seen in The Empire Strikes Back on Bespin is rather interesting since he did mention that he did what he could to escape the labors of others, meaning he was attempting to gain his freedom after so long. But how or why Kuiil ended up on such a lonely planet all by his lonesome is hard to figure. Solitude might have been his goal, but the choice of planet is still a mystery. Yet another mystery, and one that a lot of people are hoping to see more of in the episodes to come, is Cara Dune. The former Republic shock trooper was given a decent explanation of how she came to be in the Mandalorian’s path but to be certain we’re all ready to see her again since not only is she a certified badass when it come to a fight, there’s definitely a kindred spirit between her and the Mando largely because they’re both tougher than nails and know how to throw down when the moment presents itself. Another thing about Cara Dune is that her story is one that could easily become more developed if she were to be given her own movie. Getting through The Mandalorian at this point is the most important part and seeing her again would be great since it would most likely be in a situation where either she or Mando would need one another to get out of a tight spot yet again. All in all though, Cara Dune is someone that a lot of would like to see once more.
Before going on to the most enigmatic and obviously addictive character I wanted to make mention of IG-11, the droid bounty hunter that Mando shot when they both discovered the bounty they were seeking. At first it was easy to assume that it was IG-88, another bounty hunter droid that showed up in the original movies. But apparently the designation had to be changed just a bit for reasons that we might not be privy to. IG-88 met his eventual end when he downloaded his consciousness to a superweapon that was subsequently blown up, showing that droids can be subject to ignorance and lack of foresight as well. Of course if you read a little further you’ll notice that there was in fact an IG-88A and and IG-88B, so only one of them was destroyed, but we won’t go any further than that. Maybe there was a copy of IG-11 and maybe there wasn’t, but the character was interesting to see even if it was confused with another more well-known but similar character.
Now to the character that everyone has been buzzing the most about, Baby Yoda. There’s no doubt at all that this character has more to accomplish in this story than just being cuter than about anything else that’s come along in recent years, but the theories are still abounding as he and the Mando go from world to world, touching lives and narrowly escaping as they go along. The most current episode shows what people have already discovered, that Baby Yoda is a bit hard to keep in one place since like a toddler he likes to wander, no matter that he’s 50 standard years old and can’t even speak yet. Obviously Yoda’s species ages far differently than many others, which hopefully doesn’t mean that by the time the Mando is in his golden years the kid would start talking. One thing is very obvious though, between Baby Yoda, Yoda, and Yaddle, another Jedi Master of the same species, it’s clear that the Force is strong within their species, as Baby Yoda is showing that he can do things that no child should be able to do even if they’re Force-sensitive. Just imagine if this little guy was allowed to grow up and reach his full potential, he might be even stronger in the Force than Yoda.
